Dose anyone know the wear tolerance for the upper ball joints on a 01 4x4? I have a upper with 1/8" verticle movement, seems loose to me.

ball joints

ball joints are not to have any play in them. left the alignment shop today after being told my ball joints were loose on right side and one on the left. right side tire has been wearing bad. am going to dealer tomorrow and inform them they need to order some... 2001 with 27000 on it... . wonder if anyone else having the same problems?!

Mine are bad on the right side of my 2001. Greatest engine in the world , but it comes wrapped in a MoPar-ts needed package. Bummer.

Dealer price on the ball joints is about $217, and they won't hold up any better than what's already on the truck.

If it's under warranty, great. Mine's not, too many miles.

Due to NAPA and Moog not having anything yet for this year of truck, I'm going with a company called Ingle Products that sells ball joints that will fit. It's part # 615, at $132. 38 each.

800-641-9795.

I had a thread going sometime ago about this same problem, and another member posted the info I needed to track this part down...

Same story for me too. Both the right side balljoints had to be replaced at 56K on my 2000 2500. My dealer wanted about the same price for them, but it is on the books for a 5 hr job. There is some serious labor charges there. Luckily they are about the only front end part that is covered in the extended warranty. My steering gear leaks like Briar's too.

Was that me Briar? If you think I'm the one that put up the #'s, PM me this weekend, and I'll look again for them. I do remember putting balljoint #'s up a while back.

I just went through a butt load of reciepts, and cant find the one with the part #'s on it.

Mine is a 98, but I dont see why they should be different.

I dont see why any decent parts place wouldnt be able to find them for you.

If I remember correctly, prices I got were about $50. 00ish a balljoint, $188. 00 for the track bar (lifetime warranty), and pittman arm (dealer only) was about $56. 00.

Briar, do you know if the Ingle units have grease zerks? I think it's pathetic they do not equip our trucks with serviceable ball joints and expect them to go without any added grease for thousands of miles supporting a heavy diesel engine.

I have a 2wd that I drilled the ball joints and added zerks and I give it a shot every 5,000 miles. I jacked it up a couple days ago and gave my frontend a good shakedown and everything is very tight. I have 56,000 miles now. I haven't exactly gone off-roading much but I have gone up some very punishing dirt/rock roads a number of times.

Whats even funnier is the fact that the ball joints with the zerks(and maintained flawlessly with LE's grease) are the POS's that are bad. The right upper is just starting to get loose the left upper is shot. Another funny thing is no noise and it handles like new. When they align it I am takeing the spec article thats floating around. The service mgr said to bring the article in and he would follow the instrutions. I'm probably a big PITA to them but the results are better if I deal with the S Mgr. It's hard to believe that they are worth(or sell for) over 200 bucks each, that an expensive not so long lasting part + labor. That job would put a dent in the cost of an x-tended warr.

ball joints

my truck 98. 5 presently has 180000 km. or 110000 mi. ball joints all most no wear . greased every 10000 mi. using needle grease gun and red ram grease. :) :) :)
