Hello!

The quote of $2400 sounds about right. That is the general quote that my brother was given when his went out of his 2nd Gen, 98. 5 2500 FWD. The truck only had 28 thousand miles on it. He sold the truck two weeks after he learned of this!

I say your dealer is full of it. There is no spec for "side to side" play. They have to measure them with a dial indicator, for "up and down" movement.

I'm glad your getting new joints, but I still say they don't know how to check them. The chances of all four joints being bad at the same time are just too hard for me to believe.

SAG2 I agree. Thats why I asked if they were doing them GOODWILL stuff. Just to keep someone happy and another job for them. Seen that situation HUNDEREDS of times over the years. In previous posts I mentioned THE HUNDEREDS OF THOUsands of DOLLARS of GOODWILL warranty money spent. One resaon I said a broken part because of a BOMB is no big deal for the factory. NOW not saying there not bad eaither but all FOUR! Sure would like to know specs on those four.

There may not be a spec for side to side play but can you honestly tell me that if I can make the joint move a bit by pushing and pulling on the top of the tire a good ball joint? I can't, that's for sure.

As for the bottom joint I have no idea if they checked it or not, but they had it for awhile and knowing my dealer if it wasn't bad they likely wouldn't replace it so I would imagine they checked it.

At a little over 50,000 my 97 had the ball joints replaced under warranty. All highway, no off road. Took it in for bad wheel bearing and they said the ball joints had to be replaced too. next day took I took it to a local shop for State inspection and it wouldn't pass. Mechanic showed me and I couldn'r belive how the wheels flopped. Took it to another dealer and they replaced them again with ball joints I could 'SEE' were new by the shiney metal as I walked past the truck. Hmmmmmm.

The first thing I did when I got home was to check and make SURE they were changed, along with all the window felts and the new PS hose for the 2100 rpm vibe TSB.
