Ball joints-How much grease?

I grease my d-250 every oil change and was wondering how much grease are you suppose to put in the ball joints? I just greased mine and usually keep pumping it in until it starts coming out, sometimes 20 pumps, but after i went for a drive i noticed gobs of grease all over the brake rotors and on the tires. How much grease do you guys pump in your ball joints?

On a two wheel drive about three pumps on the gun at the most.

I do ball joints like U-joints- purge the old crap out of there, then wipe it all off. That way, you get new grease lubing things.

I'm with Daniel on that. I have 420k miles and still have not had to replace any front end parts.

I load mine up pretty good. It can make a mess but clean things up best I can before driving it.



What I wanna know is if you have to lift the vehicles weight off the joints to properly lube???

I was told years ago that to properly lube an OTR truck it has to be up on the frame hoist. So I always do. Both with buses and my trucks ball-joints.

I lift mine when greasing ball joints, but when i let it back down it must push more grease out. How do you purge all of the old grease out of ball joints? It would take more than 20-30 pumps to do that on mine. I would like to just give ball joints a few pumps of grease but how would i know if it did any good?

Well if you don't grease it for a while, you can tell for sure that it does some good. An old machinist said to me that any kind of lube is better than no lube at all. He was using cutting fluid for way lub on the lathe. As to having the truck on a lift, that will allow the grease to get fully into the load side of the joint. Still, whatever, some is better than none.
