I believe it's not recommended unless you really know what you are doing. You can easily make it worse. The bands have thin paper liners.

The band linings are paper thin NOT thin paper. Regardless, they seldom need adjustment until you do a rebuild. Many posts on this subject but main advice is "Leave them alone" and you'll be fine.

I still say if they're adjusted to spec while you have the pan off, no harm done. Sure, maybe they never need adjustment and they'll work fine until they're 99% toast, but I'd rather know for sure. 2 minutes with an in-lb torque wrench and you KNOW that someone at the factory didn't screw up.

I just did my 30000 mile service and the book says you should adjust the bands. I did (using the service manual procedure) and the trans shifts much better. I was noticing the shifts getting a little sloppy but they're firm and smooth again, just like when it was new.

The owner's manual says to adjust them when you change the fluid and that's reason enough for me to do it. I guess you could let them go until they're toast but I'll bet they last longer if they're adjusted properly.
