Banks High-Ram intake question.

A funny thing happened yesterday while installing my Banks High-Ram intake. Since my truck is a 06 it did not come with a intake heater grid grounding strap. So, as per the instructions I installed the grounding strap supplied with the kit from the intake heater grid to the engine, as demonstrated in the attached picture. After securing all wiring harnesses I reconnected the batteries and tried to start the truck but it would not even crank. #@$%! Because the ground strap was the only thing new to the electrical system I immediately suspected it was the issue and removed it. I proceeded to recheck all harnesses that I removed or rerouted during the install for proper connection but everything was fine. After some time passed and after disconnecting the batteries a few times the truck started. I suspect it was the starter relay that was tripped and preventing the truck from cranking. Has anyone who installed this intake had similar issues with the grounding strap? Is it not required on my 06?

If you use the oem style gaskets for the intake horn you do not need the ground cable. If you installed the ground cable on the wrong stud at the grid heater it would give you issues upon a cold start attempt. Hopefully you just tripped the internal protection device in the tipm and not killed it.

Hopefully you are not located in California. With the new smog test coming you will have to pull the intake back off to pass.

Thanks Bob4x4. I was able to reuse one of the OEM gasket between the motor and heater grid. The gasket between the Banks High Ram and heater grid was replaced with a Banks gasket that came with the kit. Whatever happened must have only tripped something because the truck started and does not have any trouble codes. Would I need the grounding strap with this configuration?



I am not located in Cali so I shouldn't need to take this intake off again.

Hopefully you are not located in California. With the new smog test coming you will have to pull the intake back off to pass.

I only reused one OEM gasket. The other came from the kit. Should I replace the one from the kit with a new OEM gasket?

No, That gasket has No effect on the heaters. Buttom factory gasket,Top Banks gasket.

Thanks TWest. Based on what I explaned in my initial post do you have any idea why the truck wouldn't start after I installed the grounding strap?

Make sure you have the feed+ and the ground- cable on the correct stud?

How can you tell which post is "feed+" or "ground-"? I installed it exactly as demonstrated in the picture I uploaded to this thread and it prevented the truck from starting or even cranking.
