Help me out guy. I just had a 2000, 4X4 w/35" tires, Banks Power Sys (Stage Three) in the shop for high EGTs, over heating and low power. The first guy who worked on it changed the thermostat (I told him to do it) and ran it on the dyno (Clayton Truck Dyno). Dyno run results were:

170HP (Wheel out put equal to 75% of engine output), low on HP

1150 EGTs;

20psi (40. 5 in Hg) ECM boost;

29 psi actual boost;

200* F coolant temp, 215*F before changing thermostat;

constant jerk/stumble (not an Engine miss)

At this point I took over the job. Call Banks and they were very helpful. We discuss the symptoms and the faults, boost out of range, no boost signal, over heating and 211 OEM Fault(???). We agree to ck all connections for loose contacts or corrosion. Did not find corrosion but found what I feel were loose connections. I then decided to disconnect the Banks Sys and run it stock on the dyno. The results were:

130HP;

No EGT readings with Banks off;

22 psi (44. 6 in Hg) ECM boost

No boost gauge with Banks off;

195* F coolant temp;

continue to jerk but not as much (not an engine miss).

I then notice that the RPMs did not look right. I was running with the OD on and this is what I saw:

60 mph @ 2550 rpm with 133 hp

55 mph @ 2500 rpm with 130 hp

50 mph @ 4550 rpm with 130 hp OD dis engage

45 mph @ 4500 rpm with 128 hp " "

40 mph @ 4500 rpm with 110 hp " "

At this point I knew I had a transmission problem specially when I notice I had a transmission leak from the front seal. Explain to owner he needs to take care of transmission before we can continue with the trouble shooting. I then get a call from a transmission shop, apparently the transmission had been rebuild recently, telling me I did not know what I was doing. I'm no transmission guy but I know that the last truck I ran with the same set up was doing 220hp to the wheels and for every 5 mph drop in speed it equal to 225 rpms and would down shift. What do you guys think?

Pablo,

Remove all aftermarket hardware, then try to get the engine to run correctly.

Next, call a transmission shop that "knows their stuff" have the transmission diagnosed.

I would also tell the guy to s--- can the Banks stuff (seems like it causes alot problems around here) In my honest opinion.

slipping transmission

Ditch the "transmission expert" and deal with ATS, DTT, Dave Goerend, SunCoast etc - those that are the real transmission experts. I know Banks claims to back off power when shifting and locking up, but I seriously doubt that will work long term. BD had a unit (power lock or similar name) that will fool the transmission into uping the pressure. This might be a temporary cure, but long term - get an upgrade from one of the above named places. I know I have mentioned this before but stock power is already questionable, ANY upgrade needs a transmission upgrade to go with it if you want something you can depend on.

22 psi (44. 6 in Hg) ECM boost

No boost gauge with Banks off

Don't forget when testion with eveything dissconected::

the truck is defueling as the Banks kit cannot fool the truck into seeing UNDER 20Lbs boost. Theese trucks DEFUEL at anything above 20 Lbs.

What you are feeling is the truck falling on its face defueling cause of the turbomod allowing the turbo to spool beyond 20.

Back when I had JUST my powerpack kit on I destroyed the entire trans in ONLY 1500 Miles! Be careful! DTT solved that issue

Tool Man, can you tell us if you contacted Banks for their explanation of " does not affect the warantee" ??

Will banks replace the trans??

Okay, I got a question... .

4500 RPM with a 2000? Ain't that kinda hard on a VP44? Also, did you check the Lift Pump Pressures? A bad Lift Pump could cause some low power and a sorta miss at top end. And the transmission is definatly unhealthy. The truck is making way too little hp to the ground. A slipping transmission will heat up the ATF and cause the water temps to up.

Sounds like a sick truck, but hopefully, it's just the transmission.

Highly unlikely about them replacing the trans . This happend to me 18K miles ago and Ask Mopar Muscle what happened to the trand ... . He saw first hand. At that point DTT found its way in th rig.

Sorry guys, that was a typo, 2450 RPMs and not 4550. It turns out the jerking was the transmission trying to go into lock up mode. If I kept the OD off it did not jerk at all. I know some guys do not dyno with the OD on but in my case I need to try every thing to try to duplicate the problem since I do not know how the owner/driver drives the truck. I believe that the engine was putting the HP, stock and with Banks but do to the transmission it could not transfer it to the wheels. Thanks you guy, for the input. Pablo
