Sorry guys, Banks is wrong. No Cat on an 03
Now i am stumped. After crawling under my truck, there is what looks to be a cat. Although it could be a resonator. I searched my owners manual and couldnt find any mention of one, although they state i will void your warranty and break the "sound control" law,if i modify my exhaust. I kid you not. On another forum a Ca. Cummins owner said he removed his "cat". Another member asked him what it looked like inside, his reply was something like "it has screens at both ends, and a very small opening" he also stated he took the "cat" to the muffler shop to get the replacement pipe, and the shop owner saw it and said he wouldnt sell him the needed pipe. Posted on Dieselramforums.com,about 3 pages into the 3G. Time for a trip to the muffler shop and a pro opinion. Mark. ;)

Catalytic Convertor removal beware!

It is illegal to remove or tamper with any catalytic convertor on any motor vehicle. This is a Federal Emissions Law which is on the books for every state in the Union. If a vehicle came equipped with a Cat Conv then it must remain on the vehicle unless it is used solely for "off road use". Last I heard it was a

$ 10,000. 00 fine for every emission infraction the feds can pin on you or the shop who did the so called modification!

well I remain confused as to how one should interpret the Banks HP numbers  they just don't have any meaning in the 305 HP world. and Banks really isnt qualified to tell us either, unless they've tested one. in which case they should post numbers! :D

Good thing we don't have to worry about this with the Dodge CR's then eh? :)

Thanks TDK. Where ya been?

That is a resonator.

Fence,

I bet you could go to the local dealer and they would tell you it is a Cat. They would be wrong again.

As for the sound laws, You can get busted for tampering with the stock exhaust. If the Chippy is gonna be a Prik, you might get a sound ticket.

I will take a picture of my 5" resonator tomorrow and post it. It looks just like a Kat. Maybe I put one on by mistake?:-{}

Thats the same set up as mine. Are we positive this is a resonator and not a cat? Did the exhaust tone change after it fell off?;)

Heck,Im hoping you are right Greg. As far as the sound,i could give a rats a#$ about another "law" here in Kalifornia. Although i dont want a loud rig. I am concered in performance only. Sounds like it might lower egt's a bit too since it has been desribed as very restrictive. Im getting gauges installed next week, and getting a chance to spin the rollers at a local shop. Next step might be D. D. 2's,got any laying around?how are the D. D. 3's working with the new turbo? Thanks,Mark. ;)

Mark,

I got the 3's in right now. New turbo is huffin and puffin to keep up. I like the power pretty good. I can keep the egt's in check alot easier with the piers turbo. Greg.

On April 3, our SO CAL RATTLIN RAMS is having a Dyno Day. Come on down and join the fun. It is going to be at AFE in Corona.

Greg,Thanks for the invite. a member on another site states the Cat info is on page 11-2 in his service manual. I have looked thru my owners manual, warr info manual and maint logbook and cant find it though. Maybe its a early '03 versus late '03 deal?On edit:There is talk of a cat on ca. trucks on page 27/5. 4 and page 20 "catalyst discussion" and page 23 and page 25/5. 4 in my warranty info manual.

I was told thadt so many scattered thuout the Us were built with CATS on the 03's. I looked under trucks on the lot here in Georgia and we found one with WHATEVER that thing is and it sure looked like a CAT to me.

this has been an interesting dicusssion. I guess we have to assume that the Banks "recommended airflow improvements" make the CA truck illegal to run on the street?

Sounds like it, Doug.

Personally, I think its a little cheesy to make the power claims with the "recommended airflow improvements". Makes it difficult to compare apples to apples.
