Hey, I've been with Wells Fargo but now I've moved east and need to find a new bank.

I've never really spent much time looking at banks, are there any that are particularly good in Illinois, or should I maybe find a credit union?

I'm only 21 and don't know much about this stuff...

Can't help you with banks in the east. Usually, when the title says Banks in here, it's a totally different meaning. :-laf I was caught by surprise! I'm leaning towards some of the smaller banks in my area now. Left Wells Fargo a long time ago, now with BofA. Maybe just a credit union.

CB,

I don't think you should have any problem finding a Wells Fargo. I have banked with them for many years and Wells Fargo had acquired the Norwest Banks that were here in MN. You may only need to do an address change and that way you don't have the hassle of setting up new accounts at a new bank. Good luck on your move.

CB,

If you qualify for a credit union, join it. They will almost always treat you better, as you are a shareholder. Their fee structure is usually more customer friendly.

I have belonged to Navy Federal Credit Union for years. If I want a car loan, they only want to know how much, and how long to pay on it. They always have rates very low too. I never even go to a branch office. They mail me the check and I mail the title to them.

However, I belong to another federal credit union that does not have that lenient a lending policy. So look around. Good luck.

How would I know if I qualify to join a credit union?

I was under the impression that there were no wells fargos around here... someone told me they were only out west. I've never really liked Wells Fargo though, and plan to change banks anyways. They have made a few mistakes and there website is really slow...

Wells Fargo is in IL and IA, as well. We have several in the area. Is there a Deere Harvester Credit Union (JHCU) in your area? I was with them when I was in IA. Pretty nice. :) IIRC, the inidvidual branches are independant of each other. At least they used to be.

Go to their website. It will list who is eligible. A lot of them nowadays use a geographic area; if you live or work in such and such county... .

Credit unions are supposed to be a great deal. I've found banks to be very polarizing: two people often have polar-opposite opinions on the same bank. I like 5/3, many people think they're evil.

For decent financial advice you might consider listening to Clark Howard . He loves credit unions, and hates banks.
