Spinal Fusion Surgery...

water as fuel

My wife's aunt and uncle own race horses. Last time I was there someone slipped one of their horses a "mickey" which caused him to "bleed" and lose the race. They've given me the impression that there's a lot of foul play and corruption in horse racing, and that the horses are so heavily drugged that they're "not quite right" in the head.

Any of that true?

Its there

Lots of corruption for sure. My best friend put some liniment on his horses ankles before a race once, and it turned out that another trainer had given it to him, it was laced, and after winning the race the drug test turned out positive for steroids. He lost all his customers and had to sell his barn. But, most trainers work the heck out their two year olds before races. Barbaro sat for five weeks before the Ketucky Derby, then only had two weeks before the Preakness, this type of training may have had something to do with everything that happened. As far as drugs in horses, if I remember right they are tested after every race. Sometimes before.

Give me a good pony horse over any thoroughbred, I exercised for a barn when I was a kid of fourteen (only weighted 90#), they had a old pony horse sitting saddled by the barn while the exercising/racing was going on. He would sit there slipshod, half asleep, until he was needed to catch a run away. That horse would launch, and could catch any thoroughbred in the field. He was getting up in the years, but was plain fast.

All I know is that the jockey for Barbaro did a hell of a job getting that horse stopped and off. Only met a couple of jockeys in my day, they were a breed of their own, tough little buggers. Had one show up for a owner to evaluate a horse. He showed up in a Caddilac, had his saddle and all his gear in the trunk. He saddled up this horse he had never ridden, and was only half warm, got a hand up, and handled this animal like they had been buddys all their lives. Unbelievable. I only exercised these horses for about a year, and had problems with arm strength at that time, had a little philly who hated me, she would drop her head and take off with me. The last time I rode her she put me through a fence rail, I quit... ... :-laf

Just like any form of racing, it isn't foul play, corruption, cheating, or against the rules if you don't get caught.

Dl5treez,

Thanks for clearing up Real Quiet for us. I was too tired to look it up. If you are bored go to Belmont Park's webpage and you can watch all the Stakes racing for the last 40 years. Good quality too.

starkmr,

Thanks for the info on the circulatory problems when the horse cannot support it's weight evenly on all fours. I did not know that. I will save it for reference. I printed it and am going to bring it to work for interested co-workers. I had too change "extremity" to leg or ankle though. A couple of them are a bit "simple". :-laf

IMO I don't think there is any cheating in the triple crown races or any of the big races (Florida derby, Travers stakes, Breeders Cup). They are watching too closely. Belmont Park's website says that feed will be tested without warning during Belmont Stakes week.

My old boss told me few years ago there was all kinds of cheating in the "County fair" kind of horse races. Jockeys with "batteries". :-laf

I was reading an article about Nick Zito. He said the horses today are not like those in the 60's & 70's. They don't have the strength or endurance anymore. This sort of explains why human athlete have gotten faster and stronger over the years, and thoroughbreds have went the other way. I will type it if I get time this weekend.

Do you think Barbaro has had the best Veterinary care this county has to offer? ;)
