Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Barking phat shaft 62/14

When im under fuel throttle in the higher gears and let off the turbo barks bad. Is there a way to keep from doing this with out leting off the throttle easy?Its hard to do when your racing. Is this hurting my turbo?Am i going to break it?Thanks Jason

Yes it will hurt your turbo,you will snap a shaft but to prevent it you can get the BD Turbo guard.

Are you sure your barking it? The wastegate on those turbos is so big it almost sounds like it's barking.



I've heard a SPS64 having compressor surge hitting the gate, and it sounded like it was barking too.



I'd give II a call and see what they have to say about it.

Ive snapped to shafts off of 2 HX40's from barking. once inbetween shifts and another at the end of a dyno run

compairing a PS and a hx-40 is like apples to oranges. hx40's are a lot weaker in that area then a ps is.

Lotsa lotsa HX-40's barked to death. Today's stuff is mucho better. And larger components are going to bark more(from inertia) than smaller stuff--but be harder to break. That's my theory.



That's why you have a PHAT SHAFT! Oo.

Nothing is bulletproof but the PS turbo handles barking alot better than some of the others.

Have any of you went from a phat shaft to a super phat shaft?What can be expected to gain i thought i read where the super runs better up top but spools slower. I think industrial injection will upgrade my turbo to the super for some cash differance.

i have the sps and it spools great. Of course the only thing I can compare it to is my old hy. Barking the phat shafts from time to time will not hurt them at your horsepower. . doing it all day long my be too much, but II builds a strong product. . hence the name. I bark mine from time to time as well especially when I feel like kicking a@$ and someone pulls out in front of me :-{}

After reading all the replies to this thread I have to ask how much is this BD Turbo Guard? And before anyone says cheaper that a turbo, wouldn't a "pop off valve" be cheaper than some microprocessed gizmo? Or am I mistaken that the (basically a relief) valve won't do what we're looking for here. Plus it's mechanical not another electonically controlled mechanical device. I could be totally off the wall here and if so please educate me . . . before I get to the next step of the slippery slope.

Joe Mc it is mechaniclly controlled it uses a micro switch on your pedel.



how much??? youll be sorry you asked :-laf My price from our local speedshop is about 500$, the cheapest one i saw was at a 4wheel drive show this summer but it was for a 24valve and it was there last one-400$



And yes you could use a pop off valve

but then you have to reset it everytime correct??

Michael, thanks for the education (really) that's what this site is for - really appreciate it. Not sure about having to reset it though , never really looked into it enough - any link to a site that has them? I was thinking they were like a safety valve on a steam boiler (old Navy Machinest Mate) once they lift and resume normal pressure they close again? Maybe not the same as what I'm thinking. WOW! $4-500 for the BD one mentioned earlier.
