These are the pop-off valves i think you are talking about.

those are pop off valves to control max boost. The bd valve relieves the boost quickly when you let off the pedal so the turbo doesn't bark. The bd valve is expensive and i remember reading some where on here that someone had one and when it would relieve the pressure after a wot run, it wouldn't reseat right and would leak. He ended up taking it off. Not sure who it was one here.
 
Yes you did snap that shaft and here is the proof:
