Barking turbo

Has anyone experienced a "barking turbo" on their truck? I thought it was the wastegate opening, but its happening with mid level boost (15-20 psi).



While towing up grades when transmission shifts into OD, the turbo will make a loud bark sound.



Also, if I let it lug (1300-1400rpm) while towing, I can get it to bark repeatdely.



It had never done this without the trailer, until yesterday...



When I loaded up the Smarty on Level 1 with stock TM and stock RP and got on it a little and when it shifted into OD at approx 45-47mph without the trailer, it barked slightly.



I called Rip at Source because I was concerned this might be converter shudder but he set me straight.



He said he had never heard of this with a stock transmission and/or single stock turbo.



He attributed it to too much going into the engine (more than it can use) and the air changes direction rapidly and tries to spin the turbo backwards.



Anyone else experience this and should I be concerned/careful??

I did a search on "barking turbo" and got pages of explanations. I'll try a different throttle pedal style on the next camping trip tomorrow night.

Rip is a good guy, I'm glad he explained it to you.





I was going to ask where you are at now? You were on vacation a while ago down south, weren't you? I was kinda thinking that the high elevation and temps might contribute to it. My stock turbo would bark if the conditions were right.
 
Mine does it too when I'm in it and it shifts into OD. Doesn't sound good, almost makes me put the turbo ring back in, but other than the barking, it sounds great!
 
Mine does that too. It is hard on a stock turbo. When I first heard it, I couldn't tell what/where it was coming from. I called Dave Goerend because I thought I was having a transmission issue as it always happened when towing and when the transmission shifted into overdrive. With my tighter converter it does it every time while towing unless I'm at moderate to wide open throttle.



I have learned to drive around the problem without running wot while towing. I push my OD off button to lock out OD and build speed up to about 55 mph, then let off of the throttle and push the OD button to allow the transmission to shift into OD. Problem solved.

I have never heard that in a truck engine but I have on a locomotive.

It is caused by a dirty turbo protection screen restricting the intake air flow.

I'm learning something new today. Never heard of a barking turbo or what causes it. However, when my dog barks, I usually let her out or give her a milkbone or belly rub and that quiets her down for a while. Don't suppose it's the same thing,huh?:-laf

I cleaned my AFE filter and it still happens pretty frequently. I just back out of it as it shifts into OD.



I wondered if it had to do with my cat and muffler... too much inhale & not enough exhale?

Second that !!!!! ... . I have learned to drive around it as much as possible but occasionally it will happen anyway.

Kudos to Rip. Many years around diesel engines, easiest to understand description of turbo surging I have ever seen. In a nutshell, the engine has slowed down but the turbo is still spinning up. As others have done in this thread, I disable automatic OD when towing up hills.
 
When I had a large single turbo it used to bark pretty often. Everytime it would bark my girl friend would say "BAD DOG!!". It always made me laugh. Once I went to twins I no longer get any turbo bark. My girl friend still says she misses the dog... :-laf

I have to be careful when pulling our 17K lb. fiver in the hills. If I have to downshift, I watch the boost gauge while I let off the fuel a little. When it drops from 23 or so down to around 15, I let off the fuel and hit the clutch. Otherwise, if I try to shift before the boost drops, I get a nasty bark. Took a while to figure that out, and my timing is still off sometimes, but getting better.
 
It shouldn't matter what exhaust you're running, I have no cat and a straight through muffler and have the bark. It started after I took out the turbo silencer ring. I could put the ring back in and remedy the problem but I like the turbo noise so I also let out of it before it shifts or keep in it.
