Thought about getting one! I actually was thinking about a Viper also, from Blue Grass Armory at www.bluegrassarmory.com

I would like one but couldn't justify it then, and not now, although it would be great! If you lived closer I would have to come over and help blow stuff up!

I have a 82, it really draws attention at the range . The only problem is finding a range long enough to put it to good use. 500yrds is the longest I have found that will alow 50's.

I have only shot one 50 and it was the single shot Barrett.

Did anybody see the letter in last month's American Rifleman? Ronnie Barrett wrote a letter to the LAPD about how he was not going to repair the rifle they sent back. I guess they used one in a display for an example in some kind of press about banning the gun.

I wanted to go out and buy one of his guns after reading the letter

How did i know Nick was going to be the first one to chime in?

When someone gets one, holler at me and i'll gladly put a few rounds through it for you Oo.

Forrest, I may be getting a bike but a 50 cal is something I truly can't justify right now. I love them, but won't get one now. Although a 50 mounted on that bike would be sweet ;)

If you have not seen this yet you'll get a kick out of this site

Anti 50cal Website

I got this link from glocktalk.com - a website similar to the TDR but for gun lovers - not just glocks but all guns... and membership is free...

You can go to www.glocktalk.com do a search (without being a member) and find lots of good info on the . 50 BMG Barrett and other fun toys. .

The anti 50cal. movement is just another attempt to take away our freedoms one step at a time. Just as soon as we agree to give up . 50 cal firearms they would mount a emotional campaign to take away another caliber.

I really never considered buying one til the anti's went after them.

I would use it for groundhog hunting. My . 300 Ackley Improved starts to fizzle out at about 1200 yds. and a little more range would be nice.

bertram65 you better hurry up, there was an article in the Boston Herald yesterday about putting a ban on the Barretts.

Anyone have one? Thinking of ordering a model 99, http://www.barrettrifles.com/rifles/rifles_99.htm probably a pretty safe investment the way things are going for the . 50, especially being in MA which follows CA.

Bertram65 ... like BBarry said this is that ****** State Senator who was on the local Boston WRKO radio on Wednesday 3/16 morning talking about puting out legislation to ban . 50 cal and some small hand gun "used by gangs".

I called the Blute & Scotto show and got through to that numb **** Senator. We had a shouting match where I was providing facts about the . 50 and that the . 300 Win Mag, . 388 Laupua Mag, and other high power rifles have similar characteristis ... was he going to ban those too!!!!

He was using fear to say that a . 50 could shoot down a jet liner and blow up LNG tankers coming into Boston Harbor. I argued that this was not true in the least ... it would take the preverbial "magic bullet" shot to take down an airliner and a LNG tanker's hull is like armor plating and that IF a . 50 or other cal. round (even a tracer) did puncture a hole in a LNG tanker there is no oxygen in there to start a fire and the cold would put out a tracer in a second. All you would get would be a stream of supercold LNG squirting out.

But this guy didn't want to hear the facts, not to mention that there is no reported case of a civilian owned . 50 cal. ever used in the commision of a crime in the US. Then I lost my signal on the cell phone before telling him that Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than any civilian owned . 50 cal rifle ... . DAMMM!!

Since your a Mass resident ... you better contact GOAL and find out what THEY are doing about this outrage ... because they (the anti-liberty scum) will say the same about the other calibers next till you can't even own a . 22 short!! Call your state rep, call you state Senator and write letters and emails ... I did to your state's gun group and my US Senators and Reps (from NH) about US House Bill 654 that would ban . 50 in the USA.

I have a Armalite AR50 and use it up at my club in Barrington NH. We only have a 300 yrd range, but I hear that the Nashua and Pelaham NH, clubs have 600 yrd ranges and allow the . 50 (allow the . 50 ... what a joke, I can't understand these people that don't allow a . 50 at a range ... no different impact in the berm than a . 300 Mag or other high power magnum rifle). The Armalite is very nice and has the best Muzzel Brake in the industry.

Check out the BiggerHammer site for more info. as well as the www.fcsa.org site.

I don't know much about it but one of my friends has one. An "Armalite" I believe? Don't remember exactly. I played with it a little but haven't gotten to shoot it yet. Impressive machine.

LAR Manufacturing is right down the street from where I work.

There is also talk about banning the 50 cal. here in Utah.

I need to get one before they put the ban on it.

What a joke!!

Is there any websites that are against these stupid bans??

So if the ban the 50 cal do they have to ban all the laser pointers?? If one is pointed in the pilots eyes he may be blinded.

A sling shot and a great big ball bearing shot up at a landing plane can be sucked in the motor. Are they going to ban sling shots too??

What about all the birds that fly around at the airports, we should put a ban on little birdies too.

There are lots of 50 calibers out there.

I shot one by this company, I cannot remember the name, it is a pretty light and cheesy gun but you can stand up and shoot it on the run... I think the price is about 2k bucks. Its kick was about the equivalent of a 12 gauge shotgun.

I bought this before the Calif ban. In my opinion, it is one of the finest 50 cals made. Most use an AR style lower receiver which are weak. This uses a totally different receiver made of forged and rockwell treated steel. It is a fully tactical take down gun. Bolt action and all. Normal price is around $4,500 for the gun but I got it for 3k since the dealer ordered too many.

How do you like?

Me, my 50 cal, my nightforce scope, and the second admendment- never to be infringed... . ;)

These proposed bans that are poping up around the country are the new tactic being taken by the America-haters since their beloved AWB expired. If they can't get what they want at the federal level, they will try at the state, then at the local level.

Anyone on this board who owns a firearm MUST BE INTERESTED in this topic. As I said before, once they can define one caliber likely terrorist option ... all the other calibers and guns that shot them will fall like dominos.

A question that needs to be asked is "if this is such a danger ... why has it not happed yet in the past 3 1/2 years???????" The "terrorists" have had ample time and opportunity to do their dirty deed if they thought it would be effective.

This is a question the anti's can not answer. They have not facts, just fear.

I don't care if you fellas own a . 50 or not each of us needs to let OUR elected reps know that we will NOT ALLOW ANYMORE of our freedoms to be compromised through fear tactics.

Also ... to those of you who are NRA members, GOA members, and members of any other state firearms organizations ... you NEED to let them know you will not stand for them to stand by and let these proposed bans go unapposed! The NRA was MIA in California ... a friggen *** Dammed disgrace!!!! They never even made one attempt to fight the Commifornia AB50 bill! These organizations need to hear from you in order to have a united front against the anti's.

Hunters, shotguners, skeet & trap shooters ALL need to understand what is at stake here. It doesn't take long to put together a one page letter to your rep/senator about this issue and that YOU your fellow Fish & Game club members are very active in primaries and general elections.

Thanks for all the info, the forums were quite helpful, I am interested mainly because of the recent publicity. After some reading I think the State Arms Shorty may be a good choice, though the Armalite AR50 looks pretty good too, the Barrett's are unattainable right now, the back log is huge, I may not have time to wait. I am waiting for the dealer to get pricing and availability on the two I mentioned then I will make my choice. What kind of 50 is that in the picture?

The AR-50 uses a weak AR15 lower reciever. I would not recommend that. The . 50 caliber puts out much more pressure than a . 223 so it would make sense to use a stronger reciever. Kind of like GM making those 350 diesels with gas engine rods. Doesnt last nearly as long as an overbuilt item.

The gun I own is an EDM arms 50 cal model 99. Super strong reciever. Can be made to shoot not only 50 cal but . 408 cheytec or . 338 lapua rounds. Gun is fully tactical take down and can fit in a backpack. :-laf

link to the item is:

The state arms looks nice. It looks as more of a fun shooter then an accurate target shooter. What is the price on it? Is the reciever forged and rockwell treated? Need to ask those questions

About 15 or so years ago I bought a State Arms target model serial number 31T from a German guy named Klaus Horstkamp. The receiver was a 3 lug style and didn't look too bad. But the Bolt was terrible and I had to weld the blasted bolt handle on a bunch of times because it had poor primary extraction. I am sure they have improved in the last 15 years. Back then They came with a 1 in 9 twist barrel. They would absolutely rip the jacket right off of jacketed bullets. Make sure they don't still use the 1 in 9. scope mounted kind of off to the side also. A little odd.

List price is $1800, waiting to see what my local dealer has for a price. The rebel with the longer barrel is more accurate. Try to talk the other half into it now, bartering, I am offering to clean up the basement is exchange for the 50, seems fair to me.
