Hey does any body know where to get the barring tool for turning the engines flywheel, and how much do they cost.

Thanks ya all.

Hey dennis, I bought a barring tool from the Cummins dealer and was under 50. 00. Also when you use this, add a universal and about 3 long extensions so you can turn it up by the radiator, works real well. I put a little never sieze on the tool to aid in turning in houring. Tim:) :p

Illflem,

Thats what I was thinking. You weren't the one who out bid me by 12 cents were you? Well guess I might as well order one somewhere.

Thanks for the info and and alway this is a great site!!!

Dennis,

The barring tool is kind of a pain to get out of the bell housing when you are finished. I ground a little off the back of the tool flange on one side so I can use a screw driver to pry it out easy.

About 6 months ago, there was a post referring to a tool kit from Cummins for 25$ that included the barring tool and a case with the sockets, wrenches, and feeler guage for adjusting the valves. I couldn't pass it up. Heck the barring tool alone is 40$! I called and they sent it out. Apparently, it was a closeout special because I called again and they no longer sell them.

I have to admit, I have never used the barring tool though... seems like too much trouble. Just put a socket on the alternator nut.

Spend the time to get the Snap On one. It has a collar that lets the tool spin inside of it, making the operation smooth as silk. It is also very cost effective. www.snapon.com Part # YA9565A. It's 3/8 drive, not 1/2 as listed, making it easier to use with a universal and two long extensions.

Chris,

The barring tool I got from Miller has a sleeve, but it is 1/2" drive. Works fine, but I use an adapter to reduce it to 3/8". I made a tool tray out of some plywood that sits on top of the radiator and my grill guard. I made a support for the extension for the barring tool on the tray so it works slick with one hand.

Cost effectiveness must be thought through. This is a Snap On tool, which can be traded in a jillion times at any snap on truck when you see so much as a blemish on it. As famous as they are for 200. 00 ratchets, their barring tool, which is the best I've used and I've used them all, is very reasonably priced. And it's 3/8 drive. Try using a 1/2 inch drive one on a first gen truck. Plus, you can remove one of the sleeves and change the depth on the tool if it's in a different application. All their Diesel stuff is top notch. I'd buy it all from MAC if I could, but MAC is not making it. MAC will get you a KD, which is the Cummins one. Find KD tools, and you'll probably find it cheaper than Cummins. As far as tools go, there is no room for junk tools. I don't value the KD. I tossed mine out from my Cummins tool kit in the truck and replaced it with yet another Snap On. Timing the engine of the racer at the Muncie event in the field, my snap on barring tool showed it's true value.
