Six Gun not working

Got mine as part of a Cummins toolkit, includes a few sockets, and a couple of wrenches. Made by K-D tools.

Ryan - it's used to turn the engine over, manually, using the flywheel.

I picked up a K-D barring tool at Rocky Mtn. Cummins for adjusting the valves every 24K on my 98 12v. I have been wondering, and hoping, the same tool will work for the 3Gs. Any experience with this?

I just bought one this week from Snap-On... made by Blue Point. The price ain't great... forty-something, as I recall... but I'm kindof a tool freak and its very nicely put together. Works well with my 36" 3/8 extension.

In a word, you are not correct. Sorry, that was four words. :D

Then how do you get access to the flywheel on a standard? I didn't think there was an inspection cover...

Ryan,

On my '96 5-spd there's a hole in the front of the bellhousing on the pass side. There's a rubber plug in it that comes out so the barring tool can be inserted to engage the teeth on the flywheel. I have a Snap-On barring tool but haven't used it yet because I don't have a 36" extension. It's a quality tool but it's 3/8 drive - go figure. Would have thought it would be 1/2" (turning over the Mighty Cummins, ya know) but I have an adapter so makes no difference. So far, I've just put a socket on a crank pulley bolt - works fine.

Gee, I just noticed you have an '03 6-spd. Maybe you don't have a hole in your bell housing.

I also picked up the Snap-on / Blue point. Nice tool, you can pull a snap ring, move a spacer and use it on a different motor (not sure which one(s)). Paid around $49-50 ish, but got it at the same time as the SP500 for timing. Glad I got it, but would have rather paid $33.

Be sure to have plenty of 3/8" extentions, w/ wobbles and/or U joints. Nice being able to turn from the radiator. I used an air ratchet for 'going around the horn', really sped things up.

You won't regret buying one. I saw one on eBay for ~$26, but snoozed. :(

Went by Cummins today and they had one less in stock when I left.

I wish I had got the kit that had them and some other tools in it that was discontinued. (Snooze you lose  )

Got that kit, too. I think the kit was about $100. Comes with a filter wrench, sockets, a couple of wrenches, ratchet (flex head) and barring tool. When I bought it, the guy at Cummins South said that it has all the tools needed for normal maintenance on the Cummins Engine. So far he has been right. It doesn't have a 22mm socket though.
