Has anyone here used one? I have one but have not tried to use it yet. Is it possible to use it with a loooong extension from the front of the truck or does someone have to crawl under to use it?

jbolt,

I have the Cummins barring tool kit. It is a neat little kit to be sure but... ..... were the heck do you get a 4 1/2' extension !!!!!

The one time I've seen it used at a shop, there was one guy under the truck and one guy at the pump saying "..... turn, turn, turn, turn, wait, go back..... " Ya it was funny to me too :)

Most use the alternator nut and turn it CCW to barr the engine over.

Bob.

hehehe I've got the 4 1/2' extension covered, I'm just wondering if it can actually be inserted from the top past the turbo & heat exchanger.

I guess I'll find out today. If not I'll have to flip a coin with the wife to see who goes under the truck! ;) :D

Hi jbolt,

Just a thought or two that might keep you more happily married, or at least while working on your truck:D With the help of a U-joint you can turn the engine over with out laying your your back. The other thing is that a bit of oil on the barring tool makes it easier to get into the hole and get it back out. I ground a bit of a spot out on the tool so I could use a screwdriver to pop it out. Good luck. Merry Christmas!

Morning Jeremy- aren't you supposed to be doing chores :D

I have a u-joint and some other bits and pieces I'm hoping will work.

Now if I could only get that dern timing in to engage.

Even with the alternator method the wife still has to help. She's a good sport. Has to be to be married to me. :-laf :-laf

My timing pin was a pain also. The only way I could do it was to hold it in. Untill I felt the notch. The notch on mine only felt like a drilled dimple on the gear. There wasn't anything for it to drop into.

Spray the pin down with some carb or brake cleaner.

I just turned mine off the alt pulley. I just ran my valves last week.

Yes you can bar the engine from the top. Just make sure the engine is cool or you might have a B. Q. :p

A 22mm on the alt is easier. ;)

Merry Christmas

BWAA HA HA HA!!!!

Barring tool from the top or bottom for that matter my butt. Sheesh!

Hmmmm... . lets see, all we have to do is remove the intake hose, lossen the down pipe, use three extensions with two universals and it might work. HAH!

Alternator works much better with the new belt. Anyone want to buy a barring tool.

Jay

jbolt;

find a 41/2'--5' water key, cut off the end that grabs the water shut off on your water main, make the end to fit your universal joint, grind, drill and put in a drift pin, or weld it, now you have a specialty tool no one else has. go to your local home improvement store, plumbing dept.

just my penny's worth

Marv.

Hey Marv,

I made a long extension that would work fine if it were not for the down pipe blocking the access plug. It's just not worth fiddling with. My first attempts with the alternator method was before I replaced the belt. Works much better now with a new belt on.

My TDC locating hole is like Philips, nothing more than a dimple. Makes it a little tougher to locate.

long extenson

 Hey fellas, Harbor Freight has the long extensons cheap and with a wobbly and a few more extensons ther is no need to remove anything to bar the motor. A little never sieze on the bar tool and really, no problem. I had to remove the timing pin completely and free it up so it could engage. You can bar motor standing in front of the radiator! If you like, you can use electrical tape to secure the extensons. Tim:D :D
