BASEBALL FANS: Help!

I have a bet with my boss (double or nothin' for a beer)... about what I seem to remember about a structural column in the out field of a major league stadium! I do not follow baseball as I did when I was younger, but I do recall (I thought it was the new Houston stadium) a column about 10 feet off of the outfield wall that was actually in the playing field??!! I have searched the web trying to find it.

Am I crazy and owe my boss a beer??!!

I sure am thirsty... . and any input would be refreshingly appreciated. -frank.

Comerica Park in Detroit also has a pole (flagpole if I remember correctly) that is "in play". Unless this changed when they moved the fences in.

You know what is really pathetic. The Tigers are much more enjoyable to watch then what I have to suffer through. (Evergreen state... aka. Seattle) Right now it would be more enjoyable to have my figernails slowly extracted with a set of tweezers then to sit through 9 innings of a Mariners game. :{ :{ :{

man I been a ranger fan my whole life and it's nice to finally see themplay well. Though they still have crappy pitching. I wish hey'd quit worrying about hitting 500 foot bombs and get someone that can pitch.

Just got into it on our stations Sports Call-In Show, and the Rangers good luck will not stay up. They are having a season that only the Yankees can have.

I too am a die hard Mariners fan even though I live on the right coast. I have been since 86 when my beloved Red Flops broke my heart again. I swore them off up until last year they had me again with their clutch play in the playoffs.



I still love my M's,but it has been tough this year. I had a chance to see them play in May here at Fenway. They won the game we were at,although it was the only one they won in the series. Atleast I got to see Edgar play what may be his last season. I was in Safeco the night they won number 100-101 back in 2001. Turns out it was only 2-3 days before the world changed for us all(9-11). I had a great time,and the satdium,fans,and whole area around Seattle was excellent.



Maybe they will turn it around next year. Now that is a sentence we have heard around here in Boston for a long time.

I am actually rooting for the Ranger to win the west. The reason... . just to pi$$ off A-Rod. Hummm, lets see, A-Rod leaves Seattle to play for a *contender*. What a flippin joke. (Sorry Rangers fans). Anyways, he leaves and the Mariners go on to win 116 games that season. (Hey A-Rod, stick it where the sun don't shine) So the whole time he is with the Rangers they finished in last place all three years. Then he gets traded and guess what, the Rangers are in first place. Do you think it is coincidence... ... I think not!



Unfortunately A-rod is finally going to get the last laugh..... he went to the eventual 2004 WS champions and gets his ring. Darn



I think this proves that unless you are the Yankees, paying that much to one person does not help the team. When are they going to put a HARD salary cap on baseball. Give the small market teams like Oakland mad: ) a chance.

now I know your bitter and totally understand. You probably hate A-Rod and just needed to vent. Give the rangers credit though, they have some VERY young talent that truly stepped it up this season, it's probably a fluke, but a few career years can make a team and that is exactly what happened. Look at Mike Young his numbers are just sick for a guy of his "caliber". Hank Blalock has truly blossomed, chumps like kevin mench are taking advantage of an injury and stepping in to fill a huge role.



Lest not forget the gambler, Kenny Rogers! hahaha man I can't help but giggle when I think of my beloved rangers. Soon enough they'll be 15 games out again I know!

My above post was meant to be more humorous then serious. I do chuckle though knowing that twice the team he left was better without him. But realistically, would anyone pass up 252 million dollars. Let me just say that I would question the person's mental stability who did. The only thing that put me to simmering was that he said he wanted to go to a contender. Let face it, at the time the Rangers were no where near a contender.



However, sticking with the young guys has paid off for the Rangers. They truly do have a really good team. Not sure if they have the experience to win the west this year but if Tom hicks doesn't have a fire sale then they are only 2 good starters away from a playoff team. Next year will be interesting to see how it plays out. I am just hopeing the Mariners don't go the way of the Indians. :{

I don't mind not having a low salary cap. It makes it even sweeter when the Yanks get beat by the Marlins or the Diamond Backs (My NL team, from the first year) in the World Series. Proves money doesn't get you a ring each year.



I remember when in the playoffs in 97 or 98 the M's (My AL Team) went 2 games down at home to the Yanks. They won the next 3 to move on to the Pennant Series.



To bad BOTH of my teams are doing poorly. But if they ever both go to the Series I have to go with the M's.



But I was very happy to see Randy Johnson get a ring that he deserved since Seattle could not get any pitching to back him up. Of course seeing him traded to my NL team made me happy.

Thanks for the link and the photo... My boss is now adamant that this does not count since the sloped area and the column is not part of the playing field and there it does not count Sure looks to me that a ball could be played there?

That sloped area is in play. The warning track in front is to warn the player of the slope and pole. I watched Rangers center fielder Jason Conti make an over the shoulder catch running up that hill the other day.
