Optimas are optimally optimum

Regular lead-acid batteries last 18 to 24 months here in the Phoenix area. That's true even of those you can add water to. (Sure, there will be some that do better, but it never happened to me or anyone I know. )

When my OEM batteries died in 18 months, I replaced them with red top Optimas. That was in 1998. In 2002, we were headed east for a few weeks, and my experience told me that no battery that lives here could still be good after four years. So I junked the dead golf cart batteries on my travel trailer, and replaced them with the 1998 Optima red tops in parallel. I put a new set of Optima red tops on the truck.

Now it's 2005. The 2002 Optimas are still doing fine. The 1998 Optimas are still doing fine as the best deep cycle batteries I've ever used. (Keep in mind that they are not *real* deep cycle batteries, of course, and I avoid deep discharging them. )

I can't speak for cold climates. In hot climates, I'll stick with my Optimas, even at the price.
