2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Battery Button

A while back I replaced my battery on the drivers side, it was venting and ate up a bunch of paint, and I noticed that underneath the battery there was some sort of switch that had two wires coming from it underneath the battery and seemed to be built into the battery tray. Couldn't see any purpose, anybody know what it is? Gots me stumped.
