I have had two batteries blow up. Both on a Dodge. Both factory batteries.

First one on my '89 Cummins. Stopped to pick up some lumber, went to start it and there it goes. This one left me sitting since my '89 only had one battery from the factory.

Second one was in my '94 Cummins. Stopped for a coffee in the AM. Went to start it and there it goes. Passenger side, dented the hood.

Took the battery to an Interstate dealer and asked what could cause it. Apparently, according to him, even though the battery is supposed to be maintenance free, I should have checked and added water. He said it was very low. He could tell by marks on the plates. I wouldn't have guessed it considering the amount of acid/water that ran out from under the hood.

both times the batteries were about 5yrs. old.

I will be replacing my factory batteries soon.

"Is it any wonder why a lot of us have little or no trust/respect for these "5-Star" service departments?

THUS originates one of my biggest reasons for NOT taking my truck to the dealer for ANYTHING I can do myself - and also explains my contempt fo that revered (by some) DC warranty...
