Wiring Question

I have a flatbed trailer that I'm using to haul around my 73 Bronco. I'd like to put a box on the front of the trailer to store straps in, and put a small ATV winch in the box to pull vehicles up on the trailer if they are not running.

I also am in need of a breakaway brake setup since I've been towing for 3 months now without one.

I'm assuming an ATV winch (2000 # or so) would run off a motorcycle battery since that's what's in an ATV. Are the batteries that come with breakaway boxes the same thing? If not, could a motorcycle battery be used, and could the chargers the breakaway brakes come with be used to keep this battery charged?

Can anyone recommend a good inexpensive breakaway setup and someplace to get it?

Thanks,

Marc, my favorite source for towing accessories is Weaver Distributing, 1-800-932-8373, Fredericksburg, PA. They have kits which include the battery box, battery, switch and charger if you want. My catalog shows three models from about 22 to 45 bucks. Call them for a catalog or more info.

I've got a 1500lb ATV winch mounted on my flatbed trailer that came with a 40 amp circuit breaker...

The truck has the tow package with 12 volts at a pin on the trailer plug going thru a 40 amp fuse in the box under the hood.

I just wired up the winch direct (no battery) to the 12 volt pin on the trailer plug, and it works pretty good hauling my 1100 lb. RR track speeder up onto the trailer.

I've also got a cargo trailer with the breakaway battery setup, and THAT gets charged up from that same 12 volt pin in the plug. Dunno how that gets regulated, tho

breakaway battery

I don't think that the battery in those breakaway kits would handle a winch. It's been awhile since I had to deal any but they use to be just meet the minimum requirement (something like a 5amp hour battery) to hold the brakes on the trailer for 15 minutes or whatever it was.

If it was mine, I would hit the local RV supply store and pick up the switch and then go buy a good battery that will work with the winch and breakaway.

Two brands of swithches are Bargman and Tekonsha.
