2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Battery gauge - "Check Gauge" on dashboard

I have a 2000 3500 with 74000 miles. Here's the problem: whenever I first start the truck all the dashboard gauges work properly. But when the truck is running for a couple of minutes the battery gauge goes to zero and "Check Gauge" light comes on. Has anyone else had this problem?
