Im having some issues with my 07 ram 2500. It just happened again today. The passenger side battery overheated and blew the caps off the top of the battery. It was smoking like a steam train. The problem is this is the second time it has happened. The dealer replaced the batteries the first time and I just brought the truck to them again today. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening? If it was over-charging why would it be only the passenger side battery??

My son just had this problem with his 1st gen . turned out to be the alternator, it fried two voltage regs and one battery before he figured it out.

In his case, shouldn't both batteries be affected??? I guess I don't see how one could be affected and not the other???

Sounds like a bad connector cable between the two batteries. Maybe the regulator is reading the driver's side voltage, but overcharging the pass side. Put a digital voltmeter to both batteries, both stopped, and with engine running and compare.

I got it back fromt he dealer and they just replaced the burnt battery and reflashed the computer again. Ill have to try and put a meter on it and compare voltages. It really sucks that I have battery acid all over my fender, hood, and the engine. I can see this truck rusting out in a year...

If it's under warranty, then the dealer should cover the cleaning and such for the battery acid. As for the batteries, I had the right side blow up on my '95 but it was right at 60 month old when that happened. I replaced both batteries, not just one, I would get the dealer to replace the other battery as well if I were you.

Heres an update for you guys. No more than an hour after i got the truck home from getting the new battery and reflash I started it up and drove to the store and once again the passenger side battery is smoking like crazy. Brought it straight back to the dealer and this time they diagnosed it as the alternator. They said it is overcharging the battery. Im waiting till monday when it is supposed to come in and see what happens this time around.

I already used the baking soda trick but there is acid all over. I did the best I could. Another bonus is my heater in the truck has a pleasent burning acid smell.

Im still perplexed as to why it would overcharge only one battery, being that they are both connected together...
