Battery question? Exide

How often does a guy have to check the fluid level in the battery?

I have excide batteries. They have removable caps.

Also what do I fill them up with? I'm geussing distilled water??

I think you should check it every time you fill up your tank, but I live in the desert. Top off the cells with distilled water only.
