2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission battery sensor??

Under the battery on my '01 ETH DEE (at least on the drivers side), and built into the battery tray is a sensor of some sort. Its a round disk about 1 inch diameter thats covering a slightly smaller hole in the bottom of the tray. It is over a wavy spring washer so that it raises up a little if the battery is out. On the bottom of the disk is a socket like thing from which two wires go into a wiring bundle under the battery.

Any one know what this is??

Battery temperature sensor. It's used to regulate charging rate. You found the only one; none on passenger-side battery.

Interesting discovery Vaughn. Never would have guessed there is such a thing!



So what are you doing taking your batteries out in the first place? Upgrading to Optimas?

Yeah, and if it goes out, it sets the check engine light. Had to take it to the dealer for that one. Couldn't figure it out and I was on a long trip.

And if you live in cold country and use battery heating pads it really messes with the sensor. Makes it think the battery is very hot and drops the charge voltage.

Hi other Vaughn,

The day before when I started the truck, it took just very short time longer to fire and it sounded a bit different. When I put a volt meter on it it showed only12. 51 volts and since my wife was taking it on a 1,000 mile trip in a couple days, I took it in to have batts. and charging system checked. One dead cell= two new batteries. I bought the truck in Feb of 00, so not yet three years old.

Wife is going to Vegas to visit her brother------if you ride a cycle wear your helmet!! He and a Harley group from Vegas were on a ride to Utah. When they were off the main highway and only 10 miles from on of the guys cabin, they decided to go that last short distance without their helmets. He came around a corner and hit a deer; that was Aug. 25 and he is still in the hospital, and all this time except for less than two weeks in intensive care. Head injuries from which recovery is problematical, no other significant injuries.

If you have the High Idle re-falsh done for cold weather ideling, this is the sensor that is used to sence the outside air temp.



This is in addition to the reason it was but there to adjust the charge rate as noted earlie.
