BD cool down timer install question

The manual states that I'll need a diode in order to avoid a check engine light, but it doesnt say what kind of diode to buy. What exactly do I need to ask for at the parts store? Also, it shows a wiring diagram for the ignition switch. Where do I access that under the dash?

My BD timer came with a diode. And most of the wires you will need should be at under the steering column.

PS my timer was not the one for the X-monitor im not sure if the kits are differant.
