Ok you EZ/Gauge junkies. My question,is... will the EZ ever cause my engine to exceed safe limits?



I do not have a set of gauges yet. I tow a 8000lb boat up a long hill every week. Now that the EZ is installed, should I worry about exceeding safe temps? What temps do you see with your EZ's?

i have never had a problem exceeding temps... my pyrometer hardly ever sees 900, and yes im mounted pre turbo. . i would have to say you have nothing to worry about.
 
You will be fine, however I would get gages anyway. They are very useful in getting the base line performance on your truck and diagnosing problems.

Just make sure you don't let it lug real bad. It's ok to turn some rpms towing up a hill. As long as you do that you should be good to go.
 
Get the gauges. My truck empty with 275's and no fueling box added in would crank 1350-1400 degrees pre-turbo climbing hills on I-70 West of Denver. IMHO with a 8k lbs boat you are going to run to hot.

My truck is bone stock and up steep hills hard on the go pedal it will get close to 1200. So i would think loaded with EZ it would get hot... . I would watch transmission temps too if its an auto!

1 more thing, I was unaware that BD made the Power Edge EZ???:confused:



Does'nt EDGE make the EZ box? Dont know dont have one but Im sure their are tons of Edge boxes on this site!

Hot day, big hill, 8K lbs+ I have an ez and I would want to watch the temp. I am pre turbo and can hit 1250 just playing around unloaded.

Now, where do you recommend purchasing the gauges and which gauges will I need? I think that I would like the pillar mounts.



What make of gauges has the best look and will they be able to tie into the dash dimmer switch?



Also, do the pillar mounts that you must paint to match look good afterwards, or is there a manufacturer that has the match already. My interior is dark grey.

Do a search or two, Gauges , fuel pressure

Mopar sells spray paint to match your interior, most pod mounts come in Black from my limited experience.

I tied my gauges into the ash tray light circuit, It is tied into the dimmer and works great. Also It is easy to get to.



Get a Fuel Pressure gauge yesterday! or at least a test gauge.

Now someone correct me if I am wrong, but I have read on several threads that the EZ actually lowers the EGT's about 100*. Now if socalmat were to get rid of his muffler, and put some kind of high flow air filter in (AFE, BHAF or somesuch) plus turnbuckle, or boost elbow (is he auto or manual transmission?) the wastegate for higher boost, he should be able to keep it on the safe side towing as long as he keeps the RPM up at a suitable level.
 
When I went with a timing box (Diesel Dynamic's version of the EZ), I did see a major drop in EGTs. At the time, I was on 275s and a hot Power Edge (3 stage box), 4" exhaust and a BHAF. Empty, on stage three, I could peg the gauge easily. Now, with the addition of the Timing, at the end of the track, In the 3-4 shift, I'm just hitting 1300 degrees (Pre-Turbo) for a second untill the boost catches back up. You "Should" be fine with just stock and the EZ, however, I would recomend gauges also. When you hit the hill, try and keep the RPMs above 2200 RPM, this will keep you fine untill gauges. Now, I don't mean hitting the hill at 90 MPH :D , just downshift/lock out the OD.

Also, with an auto, you'll be near the limit of the stock auto.

I purchased mine through Dave & he has great packages & a great line of products. Your A-pillar will come painted to match your interior. I took a digital picture of mine (several) to make sure I got a good match. I believe there are several colors of gray(3).

The one thing I would recommend is if you have the auto trans, spend the $100 at your local St##ler & get the transmission line with the port for the sending unit. Putting the temp sending unit anywhere else you won't get an accurate temperature.

Your probably correct for the most part on the EGT's with an EZ. I installed A BHAF first gauges second. Didn't see much change with the 4" exhaust in normal unloaded driving. Then with the EZ still not much in unloaded driving just higher peak.



When I hit the 1200 + it's when i'm in Overdrive (automatic transmission) cruising say 50 mph and role the power in as hard as you can without kicking down a gear. "lugging it you know" I love that throaty growl that just keeps cummin...



As the RPM's/boost come up the EGT drop of course, and while towing and keeping the rpms up Socalmat wouldn't be in to bad of shape I suppose, But you still need to see the EGT, not guess in my opinion.

I have a Friend with a stock truck "other than gauges". While pulling his 5th wheel up Vail pass in a rather competitive manor, he didn't pay attention to the EGT's even with Gauges... . He bought a new turbo the next week. Of course it was a power stroke:)



Just kidding its a nice truck just not my Brand. It proves to me that a stock truck can get into trouble in tough conditions, even more so when you start the Bombing. Gauges just make sense.

I think i may be one of the few with transmission concern's with just an EZ. I have 25k easy miles on my truck and put my EZ on last month an started slipping the transmission. Although i was expecting that sooner or later... i was hoping it would be a whole lot later however. I think the main thing is to keep the RPM's up and be easy on the throttle in lockup.....

SO FAR I HAVE ONLY SEEN 900 POST FOR A SHORT TIME THEN IT DROPS BACK TO AROUND 600 AND THAT IS WHEN I GET ON IT . AS FOR PULLING AS LONG AS I HOLD MY RPMS AROUND 2100 I HAVE KNOW PROBLEMS HOLDING 600 BUT I AM POST SO ADD ABOUT 200 MORE DEGREES. READ SIG
 
I am running a EZ...

and I have seen 1160* pre-turbo (it stopped there only because that is where I got nervous and let off). This was with 23,000# gross (truck and loaded trailer) without the muffler. I would recommend at least a pyro and a fuel pressure gauge. I have Dakota Digital and I really like them. :D

I have both a Pre-Turbo Pyro and a Post-Turbo Pyro. That 200 degrees you add on is not a good idea. It's a blast to see the difference in the rate of change between a pre-turbo pyro and a post-turbo pyro. The Pre can (and does) streak up-wards and the Post will fairly lag behind. Cruising at Interstate speeds at 2000 RPMs empty, my Pre is reading 650 degrees with 10 psi of boost, my post is only reading about 575 degrees. However, the more boost I run, the bigger the differences. When I pull my trailer on the Interstate on flat ground, the difference is more like the 200 degrees you mentioned, but that's with the pre reading about 850-900 and the post only reading about 650 or so. So you see, with a change of 200-250 degrees pre turbo, post only raises 75 degrees or so. This difference gets greater on my truck when both the boost and Pre EGTs increase.

So all in all, think about the "Add 200 degrees" with a grain of salt. 900 Degrees post for short amounts of time shouldn't be a big deal. I doubt you're running very hot. Also, one thing to remember out there folks, your Cummins will most likely NOT explode the instant it hits 1300 degrees :D . I have only seen one cummins that died of excessive heat. The guy had it bombed up to about 375 hp (12 valve), towed heavy and had the pyro post and didn't really watch it. Eventually, it EGTs got so hot as o melt the Al. fins on the compressor fins of the turbo, it also blew out the bearings of the turbo, but I think that happened later... . Why? Because the guy let it go for a few weeks, still pulling heavy, with NO boost! :eek: He eventually cooked his 5th and maybe 6th pistons (it's been a while). But the think to take from this is that he probably didn't do any damage until AFTER the turbo melted. I'm sure he was cruising at above 900 degrees post for a loooooong time to melt those fins.

Overall, what I'm trying to say is that I don't think anyone should put in a Post-Turbo Pyro instead of a Pre-Turbo mounted one. I've watched both gauges on cool downs, and here's what I see. The Pre-turbo gauge cools down rapidly until it reaches the point of being about 25-50 degrees higher than the one mounted Post-Turbo. This implies that the shut down is at the end of a towing session, race or pulling session, through normal driving, by the time I'm in the driveway, the Pre-Turbo gauge has already dropped down untill it is close to the Post-Turbo. At this point, just let the Pre-Turbo cool down to 250-275 and your Post-Turbo temps are very close to 300 degrees, if not lower. Now, all this is with the stock HX-35/12 cm3 and a 4" downpipe-4"-5" exhaust. I can only guess how a larger turbo can affect this relationship.

I noticed no difference in EGT's when I installed the EZ, but once the turnbuckle was installed I could run up the same grade at least 100 cooler. With this setup, and my 11,000# + trailer, I can easily get too hot (over 1300) on long grades and have to back out a bit.
