Lifted Truck & 5th wheel! Can they mix?

I have a BD Power Edge box in my 02 truck. Ive always wondered if this voids my factory warranty. I sent a message to a place I found on the web (tsetrucks) and asked them. They told me that, because of the Magnoson-Moss warranty act, that they cant void a warranty just because of the addition of after market equipment.

Anyone have any input to that ?

Thanks,

Yep, there are lots of issues on this topic. The short of it is yes they can void your warranty. Read your warranty information book in your truck. I don't remember hearing of anyone who challenged having their warranty voided because of something they added that modified, altered, exceeded the operarional characteristics or design of the original equipment.

Now, adding a fueling box on your rig shouldn't impact your electric doorlocks, so there should be a relationship of the mod to the impacted component.

We are potentially all our own warranty station when we mod our trucks. Next time you're in your local friendly neighborhood 5-star, ask the service manager.

I believe EDGE said it best:

"While the answer is straightforward from a legal standpoint, we also want to

educate our customers (and after-market consumers) on some industry realities and offer some common sense precautions to minimize your risk.

Consumers of aftermarket products are protected by The Federal Magnusson-

Moss Warranty Act. The Act states that if something breaks on your car and you take it in for warranty repair, the dealer must honor your warranty unless they can prove that whatever modifications you have added to your car actually caused the problem.

While as a consumer you have strong legal protection regarding your vehicle’s

warranty, there is also a practical reality that different automotive manufacturers and dealers have greatly varying views on aftermarket products, in particular those that produce horsepower, such as performance enhancement chips, modified intake manifolds, or aftermarket exhaust systems. There are dealers and manufacturers out there that will use the presence of a horsepower upgrade to void your vehicle’s warranty. They will do this regardless of whose product you are using. Any aftermarket company that does not acknowledge this is misleading you.

The bottom line is that while the law protects the consumer and provides for

enforcement of the warranty, it is very difficult for most people to hire an attorney and fight a voided warranty. Edge recommends that you always disconnect and/or remove any performance device or programmer before you take your vehicle to a dealer for any service, in order not to interfere with

diagnostic equipment. "

If you READ the MMWA, it states that:

No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer's using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade, or corporate name
...

and read the section on Tie-in sales, I think this is the main force of the act people often misinterpret as protection with aftermarket parts. The warranty may exclude anything not stock as long as it is documented in the warranty. YMWV

Well, removing performance equipment has been discussed many times. My own personal view is mutual honesty is the best policy. I never remove any of my performance equipment and have had great luck at dealers accross the country. I feel being honest with them, they will be honest with me. And it has worked great so far.

In my mind, no amount of money is worth your the price of your reputation.

Just my two cents.

You are one of only a few left. Most people loose all their honesty as soon as it involves their money

this applies equally to dealers. Some will try to contest a warranty issue with the exhaust because of an installed aftermarket radiator cap.

When I had my truck in for warranty work in Maryland, a mechanic and I had a heart to heart discussion about my performance products. I had a bad camshaft position sensor that was killing my tach and putting the truck into limp mode. He made a comment he (the dealer) didn't have to cover parts/labor under the warranty because of my upgrades. I told him that was OK, and that I had owned 7 Dodges in my lifetime and how he treated me would decide if there would be an 8th. He fixed it no problem.

At another dealer, I took the truck in w/ dying VP-44. The service writer asked me if there was anything he should know about the truck. I told him everything I have on it. I already told my wife to prepped to pay $3K for the repair. They fixed it under warranty. Why? I think because he was impressed that I was truthful w/ him.

I spent 18 years of my Air Force career as a quality assurance evaluator on Air Force communications contracts. I had contractors having performance problems be honest w/ me and work with me in good faith and I would do everything legally to help them through it even to the point of coming up w/ a solution for them. I had some lie to me and they suffered financial loss and lost business w/ the government.

I'll stop preaching now... Can I hear a hearty Amen from the Congregation? :D
