I have been looking around to see what people thing of the BD Supre B turbo. NOT THE SPECIAL. Just the plan single Super B. I have not seen many post on this turbo. So if you have one driven a truck that has one or know someone that does have one please let me know your thoughts.....

I have been running one on my '96 for about 50k miles. Pretty pleased with it. Can be a bit laggy at times if I don't have the rpm's up but spools good and I can tow our heavy 5th wheel and not worry a lot about high egt's. The gate came preset at 38 psi and I have not touched it. Normally never get it over 30 psi anyway.

What injectors do you have? How long does it take you to spool it up if you had to guess? When you have your 5th wheel in tow what are you normal EGT's?

I'm running DDP II's. If I don't lag it it builds boost fast. Gets to 30 psi real quick. That is about as high as I run it.
I tow in 4th over around 63 mph. On grades or head wind the egt's get around 1200. Otherwise less than 1000.
I am also running some pump mods. , plate, gov springs, afc tuning, etc.

I have it on my 3rd gen for about 5 years. no problems at all. as mentioned above, slightly more laggy than stock 3rd gen but lots of fun once it gets wound up. limited to 40 psi is more than enough to slip the clutch

OK so i want to bring this back from the dead. I have the super b installed and my transmission installed. I have an automatic transmission with a 1700 stall converter. the bd super b turbo is a great turbo and does a great job at keeping my EGT's down when pulling my trailer. Heres the problem, with a 1700 stall converter it seems to have a ton of lag. (i have stock injectors right now). If i put a set of say 100 or 150 hp injectors will this help my lag situation? I do NOT want to change the converter, i like it a lot. is there a better option for a turbo that will still perform good on the top end also? would upgrading to the bd super b twins fix this lag problem? i do plan on putting injectors in but want to handle the lag situation first...

any ideas are welcome!

I am thinking bigger injectors, if you upgrade to the BD twins you will have more lag than now because the Super B will be the secondary charger.

Upgraded injectors will help with the lag to a degree. The added fuel wil help spool things up some what quicker. Your turbo is very similar to mine, but with the RVs and Smarty it spools up well. As for the compound question, why not if you can afford it. If you are trying to sell it to yourself I wouldn't give it a second thought. Nike says it all "Just Do It". :D

I plan to add the 2nd turbo one day if someone can tell me what i will gain other then more PIS. If i will gain less lag and cooler EGT's its a no brainer to me. but i am not sure what all the gains would be. Not sure that i am trying to "sell it to my self". i just want less lag, more power, and not increas my EGT's too much.

sorry JJpage i did not see your post before i did my last post. so twins is a bad idea right now? when would it be a good idea?

The super B is a relatively fast-spooling turbo. You will like it if you put in moderately larger injectors, like the RV Bosch units or Stage 1 aftermarket injectors. Also it will help to use a box or programmer to enhance the “torque” fueling, that is, the fueling at lower rpm range.

After you follow Mr. Donnelly's advice!

If you don't get too wild on the extra fueling, you will really like the Super B all by itself.

I wasn't implying my setup was a dog off idle. If I don't lug it, it gets on with the show. Pretty quick to spool. Really likes to tow heavy around 2k in 4th over at 63 mph or so. Until I go with BD twins this is the best single for my mods and towing.

Ok well i figure out something last night. I had a BIG boost leak. found and fixed it. runs way better!!!! also i went to the dyno today and pulled 382. 51 hp / 709. 77 torque. i am happy with that but i would like to hit the 500 hp mark so injectors are next then if i am running warm a 2nd turbo.

Put one on last year (for 3 weeks). Felt like I lost a ton of HP. Acceleration real slow, top boost ever = 29. 5#, egt's went up about 150F No, there were no leaks. Sent it back to BD. They said there was nothing wrong. To their credit they refunded my money.

I have hit 40lbs of boost on mine, in fact i did that last night. it did that easy. i have my computer set to defuel around 40lbs till i get head studs.

I can't help you on the turbo, I have never used one. All mine are stock.

Your dyno numbers show you need more fuel. With that hp you should have about 850-900 for tq. I have the same rear gears as you so low rpm power is nice. Like others have said a small step up in injector size will make a huge difference.

The 01 in my sig. runs 335 hp and 850 tq. As long as the RPM says below 2300 RPM towing, you can use this power all day. With stock turbo, boost at full power is 30-32 psi. If I am empty I can push the RPM on up with no problems overheating.

how were you able to get that much boost with a stock turbo. the MOST i ever seen was 22 or 23 psi. is your boost gauge calibrated?

Since your truck is an auto, I think the stock turbo is different than the manual used. Some of the experienced turbo guys could explain it better than I can. The waste gate on mine is controlled by boost. If you restrict the boost going to the waste gate actuator with a boost elbow and boost fooler, built in the Edge EZ you can easy get 32 lbs. I don't recommend going over 35 lbs tho. Any more and you just create heat. It is hard to beat the stock HX35 turbo up to 350 hp or so. I think the autos used the HY35, a slightly smaller turbo with a different waste gate system.
