BD vacuum actuated accessories

For those of you with vacuum operated accessories (i. e. PressureLoc), be careful when cleaning your engine bay. I used Castro Super Clean a couple weeks ago and all of the sudden my PressureLoc quit working. So, today after cleaning big blue up, I decided to take apart the solenoid valve and see ifn I could fix it. Well, low and behold, as soon as I popped the case apart I saw white dust and a stuck plunger. I figure what happened is that I went for a drive after cleaning the engine bay to dry everything off and the intake for the valve sucked in some of the cleaner. That night it dried, and blammo! Stuck plunger. So the morale of the story is wrap your vacuum valves in plastic or something to protect them when cleaning the engine bay. Nuff said.

Castrol SUper Clean can be pretty corrosive stuff... Ever read the side of the bottle? Pretty limited on what you can use it on. We have some old empty 55-gal barrels that used to have CSC in them, and the warning on the side uses the same placard as sulphuric acid. Not sure I would be spraying that in my engine sompartment...

I have CSC, but so far have only used it on parts that are either steel or rubber, and are also off of the vehicle. Streaked the heck out of the paint on my diff. cover. It works good on rubber. I cleaned the air intake hose on my Grand Am last week. It made the rubber look like new. I originally bought this stuff to keep the engine bay clean in the Ram, but am having serious second thoughts after several threads on this site.



Yes, it has acid in it, will eat the skin right off of your fingers, and sure burns if you get any on a scratch or sore.



What are you all using? I feel the need to spruce up at least a little prior to the Timberline Workshop.



Evan, what do you guys use for cleaning engines at work?

Usually, we just take it to the local do-it-yourself car wash, and it it with the warm water and soap. Sometimes we use Engine-Brite. I always use Simple Green on my truck, and I do it about once a month. Great stuff, and cheap too!

I normally just use a wet towel... wipe everything off. Every once in awhile, for the hard to reach places, I use simple green.

I have to agree CSC is some pretty corrosive stuff. That was my first (and probably last) time using it. I usually go with Simple Green, on a cold engine. Works great, but had a recommendation to try CSC from a friend. Guess I can give him the rest. I'm stickin' Green.

Forgot to add one thing...



The barrels has some residual cleaner left in them, which spilled into the back of the truck were were using to haul the barrels... Left some burns in the Rhino Lining. Nothin too serious, but definately noticable. This stuff is pretty caustic...
