Dont discount the fuel pressure gauge. It can tell you about the condition of your filter and your fuel. Compared to the boost and egt it also helps you determine how your engine is running. While running down to zero pressure in these truck is not the death sentence it was in a second gen it is still unclear just how healthy it is for the cp3, and some have died. The duramax and Euro 5. 9's that run sans lift pump have a different setup than you and your truck will not run without it. I have been working on these things all my life and when I walk up to one to try and figure out why its not running or not running right I always start with the fuel. I dont even think about anything else until thats had a look see. As an aside, am I the only one that would like to see an exmoniter with 4 readouts?

excelent comments guys. yea I thought of the filter thing over night and realized that would be a good way to monitor it. As for the condition of the low pressure fuel system, what I'm hearing is that perhaps things aren't as critical (CP3 failures) as on the 2nd gen (VP44 failures), but its still important. Its just that as far as fuel pressure gauges are concerned, the Xmonitor is the most expensive one I know of.

re: Xmonitor with 4 readouts. absolutely! thats the problem I have too. struggling with how to measure temps throughout the truck if I can't do it via the Xmon.

its like this: I feel I'm committed at some point to go beyond the Xmonitor. If I put remote temp in the Xmonitor then I can buy a cheeper fuel pressure gauge. But it might be easier to put fuel pressure in the Xmonitor and a digital temp gauge in the ashtray or something...

Just in case you aren't confused enough..... Can you use the extra X-Monitor pressure tap to measure the drop across your intake system? The filter minder sucks and this could also double as an instrument to measure how well your other mods are working.

Doug- I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a X-Monitor soon. If you get one too, let's do our installs together; your truck first! :-laf

Probes

Good lord... . Think if we call BD they could make a box with 50 inputs?

And we could request a special one with 100 or so for DLeno! :D

Actually, I have to agree with Doug. The fuel pressure is important to monitor if you're modified, but nowhere near as critical as on a VP44 truck. The reason I think this is that I've yet to see any credible evidence that low fuel pressure harms the CP3. After a lift pump failure, VP-44's were failing all over the place. Very common to have to replace a VP after a lift pump failure. Again, I've yet to hear about somebody having to replace a CP-3 due to a failed lift pump.

I'm not saying its a bad idea to monitor it. Heck, It'd be good to have gauges to measure everything (wheel bearing temps, etc. etc. ), I just don't think that monitoring fuel pressure on a 3rd gen is critical. A good diagnostic tool, yes, critical, no.

Hey 100 proof I like the way you think. I think I'll do a little investigation my self to see what is possible. I don't think what you suggest would be practical, as I THINK the pressure sending unit is an absolute pressure transducer with a voltage output. not sure about that though. interpreting the numbers would be a challenge...

I'm thinking I dont' need 100 inputs :D. But which ever "third" input (remote temp or fuel pressure) will yield the best opportunity to measure 'other' things will be of great interest to me. I'll have to think about that a bit...

Hey drilling my e manifold will be a new one for me as well!

I mounted my x-mon with 2-sided tape no holes at all,I will see how it holds in the higher temps we are having. just might have to drill for the push in darts to mount it,but not a big hole as the instructions say, wire to gauge is phone line type, small enough to run under the door seal to the gauge. gauge goes behind seal anyhow ,so it hides the line nicely. I called B-D about the dual probe set-up,they said +/- 50 degrees on pyro with the extra resistance. omega has switches that are made for this application. I am waiting on the switch then I am going to do the dual probe.
