Finally got the 5er to a repair facility.



Bottom line:

It is IMPERATIVE that ALL aspects are perfect. Spring perch welded SOUNDLY on ALL sides and the weld penetrates the axle tube and the spring perch

This is the very definition of a weld. If there isn't penetration, it just looks like a weld. I have seen some scary work done by guys on 4 wheel drives, I can't imagine some of the work that comes out of some RV shops. It is very easy for someone who isn't a good welder to make a pretty looking weld bead with a wire feed that wont hold squat. It's a good idea to shop around and find a repair shop with a competent welder. After all is done, you should re-torque the u-bolts a couple of times within the first couple of hundred miles to be on the safe side.

I had my axles flipped by the dealer I bought it from.



Been having unusual tire wear that no one could figure out. Now I know why.

Flip was a flop

One get the axle kit from Dexter , axle . Two look at the kit it has new seats that need no welding but Dexter recommends spot welding . The old seats are used to locate the new seats and offer some added hold due to the large locator nut (that can be spot welded in place too) to the seating of the spring purch ,spring sets have a center pin that locates the spring in the seat not a bolt, If the kit over under from Dexter was used the axle would not have come loose . I did my own with the kit , one side at a time never removed tha axle just did one side left then right (left rear -left front ) (Right rear ) (Right front ) then spot welded with a wire welder . The weld has not cracked or the kit moved at all . Doing one side at a time keeps the axle ancored on the side not being done keep every thing aligned . One day job.
