I guess I'm not sure if it was synthetic. It was some valvoline 80-90, that I've had stored in a wiper fluid bottle for like ten years. I figured i'd be servicing it in the next few months and would be chucking it anyway.

Driving the truck without the front driveshaft, to work today, it seemed signifacantly quieter, like maybe half the bearing noise is gone.

I'm having the U joint and cv joint or whatever the double one is called replace at Rocky mountain driveline.

I had the same crazy noise in my front end on my 07. they changed the carrier bearings and the noise was still there. I only had 60k on the truck. took it back and they changed the ring and pinion depth. they opened up the depth and the groweling noise was gone. I think they wasted their money and time changing the carrier bearings the first time around.

Like the doctor said"TIME FOR ANOTHER OPINION". Whats to hurt and have someone else check it out and give you a estimate, only your time which may save you $'s.

I think so too. With the front shaft out the noise was diminished by half. I had new u joints put on it and reinstalled to today with all the noises back. I wasn't expecting the shaft to fix it, but thought maybe stiff U Js were helping cause some of it.

Might do free wheeling hubs as most of that stuff needs to be replaced anyway and this would allow a failing front axle to continue working fora long time without too much 4 wheel or locked hub driving.
