Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Bearing swap 'inframe'

I am fairly sure this can't be done, but with the innovative people on the site, I thought it worth asking anyway.



Has anyone, or does anyone think it possible to change Main and Rod bearings with engine inframe? I would imagine not, due to the crossmember and front axle sitting less than a few inches from the oil pan. And considering you pretty much have to pull the engine out anyway just to get the oil pan out. But like I said I thought worth asking anyway.

If you are willing to pull the transmission, remove the engine to trans plate or adapter, then the oilpan can be removed with the engine in the truck.



Once you have dropped the pan free of the block, the oil pump pickup tube is still in the way. You have to snake your hand and arm into the gap and remove the pickup tube, then the pan will slide off towards the rear.



I'm not sure if you can slide the upper main bearings around the crank like can be done on many engines, if the upper mains have locator pins, then you won't be able to swap the upper mains very easily, but the rest of the bearings should be accessable.



Got a service manual?? From Dodge, not one of those 'pretend-a-manuals' from the auto parts stores.

If it were me, I'd just pull the motor. It'll probably be a PITA to torque the bolts. If it were a semi, it wouldn't be to bad. Generally more room underneath to work.

I don't need to do personally. It was just something that crossed my mine the other day and I thought it worth asking. If mine gets to the point I feel I need to change bearings the whole engine would come out anyway and run the machine shop and be a TOTAL rebuild.
