The Linex in my last two Rams were over-the-rail. I'm thinking about doing an under-the-rail this time, using a metal or plastic bed rail protectors. Has anyone had experiences, either good or bad, with 3rd generation bed rail protectors? Did you use metal or plastic units? Thanks for your help.

At the time of purchase, DC offered $300 in accessories for my truck. I got the mopar diamond bed rails which are nice but do not come down over the quarter panel. When I had my Rhino liner, installed they felt that the rails would not fit if they sprayed on top of the rail (which I did not have done)

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't of used Mopar's bed rail or the Rhino liner but an other aftermarket bed rail that came down over the quarter panel. IMHO

Greg,

I am having my on order truck done with Line-X over the rails. Why did you not want to go with over the rail this time? It's not too late for me to change my mind, yet. Thanks.

Greg

All three of my past Dodges were sprayed over the rails. Well over, and the tail gate lip also. I think it gives the best overall protection for the truck. Pete

Line-X

Over the rail for me. Looks great and really protects the truck. . $75. 00 and worth every penny of it. I love this stuff. I can not see any reason not to go over the rail unless you drive a Ferd... . ;)

Jengle: I was considering a variety of tonneau covers, and some of the designs may install better if the Linex is not sprayed over the rails. However, I was concerned that the plastic or metal bed rail protectors might not give the same degree of protection as Linex would. BTW--any reason to consider Rhino instead?

Bedliners

I just had an Inyati spray-in bedliner done on my 2003. Had the over the rail done. I want to eventually put a shell on and asked about the bedliner showing between the shell and truckbed. What they did was spray just the top of the rail to provide protection between the shell and bed. They did a perfect job. In my research, I found out that some of these companies, like Line-X and Inyati, use a hot method of applying the product, which, dries in seconds. Some of the other companies use a cold method, which, dries slower. The slower drying time aparently sometimes causes the product to "slump" off the higher parts of the bed and "puddle" into the lower parts. The advertising says that you get a "more even" thickness with the fast drying method. Aparently, you also get a more consistent grain with the hot process. The cold method can have more of a "cottage cheese" type of texture. The Line-X, here in Phoenix, Az. was expensive, I thought. Over $500. Talked them down to the $470 range. Ocasionally, I think they have a sale on for $347. I got the Inyati for $300, after talking nicely to the owner. My truck is a long bed. Hope this helps. Joe Fihn(Buffalo).

 Ok, here's my thinking on it. I thought under the rails looked better, but thought about my present truck that has nothing. You even lift a sack of groceries across the bed and you can scratch it, not to mention pitchforks and shovels with mulch and whatever else I may haul in it, I figured I will need the protection and might as well get it. The dealer I am buying the truck from recommends the Line-X, since that is what is closest or what he deals with. Over the rails will cost me $35 extra. I have seen Rhino liners and thought Line-X was better quality. I went to a Line-X place here too, so I have seen different dealers installations. Couldn't tell them apart, so I feel safe with that product. Now I can just be confused about gauges, exhaust systems and air filters, etc... . :p

Ok, my 2 cents!

A lot depends on the color of the truck, I went over the bed with Linex, the Atlantic Blue truck color with the Atlantic Blue Leer canopy looks just fine with the black line hanging along the bed below the canopy. But, my father in law has the goldy color and it would look like crap hanging over his.

I think what I would do is talk to the Linex installer and tell him/her you only want it to go across the top of the bed and not over, then you have the best of all worlds!

Linex rocks! And they do put it on sale for $400 or just under for the whole deal once in a great while.

Good luck

Greg,

I just had mine done last week. I went with Rhino though just because we have a good aftermarket shop near me. I went with the under the rail and rail caps just because I thought the overall look was better. They do feather the edges but it still looks a bit unfinished to me.

Bottom line is it's a matter of personal taste. Either way you go your rails are protected from scrapes and gouges.

I think I may go over the rail just becaue the "thin" paint on the bed rails is already scratched even though I have Putco bars on the rails. I am also going to go with a color match so it won't be as noticable.

Ya sorry about that, it is down right now do to the fact that I need to do many chages to it. Some how I just can't find the time. The specs and what not are pretty out of date.

here is kind of a back door into it if you are interested.
