pulling 5th wheel with short bed

Welding Fifth Wheel Hitch installation

After having a 5th wheel hitch installed, the bedliner had a large hole cut out. I was wondering what might be the best way to seal the liner to the bed to keep water from going in and laying between the bed and liner. I'm sure someone has sealed theirs and knows what works best. Thanks guys.

bed liner

My suggestion is to dump the drop in liner and get one of the sprayed on ones, LineX, etc. No worry about getting anything between that and the metal bed. :)

I don't think I would do that. In my experience, water will likely get in anyway (as well as moisture in the form of condensation) and attempting to seal it up will cause the moisture to sit and eventually cause corrosion rather than drying out. As far as the spray in liner types go, you wouldn't have to deal with this particular issue, but I have heard that several of the spray in liners require that the original paint, primer, etc. be completely removed for proper adhesion, and I wouldn't want to remove all the factory corrosion protection. If you get a bubble or other problem with the spray-in liner and its just bare metal underneath, well... . I'm sure you can imagine what would happen over time. I'm sure not all spray in processes are the same, so if you go this route make sure you do your homework.

JMHO.

Actually, I watched them install my Line-X liner the other day. They just go over with with 100 grit sandpaper roughing up the paint followed by a degreaser. The paint is still there just scratched. You definitely can't change your mind on the liner once they've gone that far! Line-X completely warranties their liners and will re-do the liner if it tears, which is very hard to do. I don't think it's possible to get a bubble in the liner either but I could definitely be wrong.

Good info. Just for the record, I said " I'm sure not all spray-in processes are the same" I did talk to one guy who definately said that they stripped the inside of his box down to bare metal. Liner bubbled after a couple of years and rusted holes completely through the bed. I don't know what company did the liner, so like I said, make sure you do your homework.

We don't strip the paint to bare metal, that's a major no-no... . for obvious reasons, as stated above.

Just scuffing the paint then wiping with alcohol, will give the Perma-Tech material sufficient adhesion.

I've not seen perma tech but I definitely like the line-x over the rhino liner. At least, as far as texture is concerned.

Dump the liner. I had Rhino installed two years ago when the truck was new. Never had a problem with it. The bed was sanded then sprayed. This year I laid a rubber mat down just for added protection. A good use for this is also on the front lower portion of a fifth wheel. Rocks bounce off to the trailer being towed next to you. ;) ;) ;) ;)
