What's wrong with my DD clutch?

Almost sounds like the pilot bearing is dry... the noise is the squeak/squeal from the trans input and engine spinning at different speeds...

I don't have any ideas for you, but I know a guy up here in Portland who tows for a living and is on his 3rd NV5600 at 226K miles.

If it is the transmission I would say you got your money's worth.

BTW, I hope you get it figured out and make it home o. k.

Made it as far as Salt Lake City, UT with no problems . . . . so far. Have about 325 miles to go before this load is completely delivered. I have the replacement NV5600 sitting on my bench in Idaho. I am wondering what the heck is going on as the truck continues to shift out perfectly other than the aforementioned Beeoww sound. The other thing that is perplexing is that it does not make this sound each and every time. Occurs loudest in 2nd and 3rd and goes away often when double clutching.

Steved's got a good idea with the pilot or throwout bearing.

Do you tend to sit at stop lights with the clutch depressed?

That's a big negatory on sitting at stoplights with the clutch depressed.

Made it to Pocatello, going to deliver this last vehicle in the morning and then go tear into her and have a look around.

My digital camera is in Utah at the moment but I might be able to come up with something. Hope to get it pulled out of there by tomorrow evening. Without the trailer on the truck the noise is definitely quieter but present for sure nonetheless.

My apologies for being a bit tardy on posting my findings. Was pretty involved doing the procedures for the repair plus had to take out the new 06 for a little work into Montana. The new 06 worked well but I sure did miss the power of my 03.

Without too much trouble I pulled the transmission, transfer case and clutch out of the truck. Upon inspection a couple of things jumped out. Throwout bearing was a bit noisy. Pilot bearing looked ok. Pocket ball on clutch fork was a bit worn. The most significant thing however was the hub on the clutch disc itself. It rattled and was quite loose. This clutch was a South Bend CON FE. Called Woody at Southbend and told him exactly how many miles (70,000 approx) and under what condition the clutch was used (severe). He had me ship the disc back to South Bend where they knocked off my linings and placed them on an updated disc that has a significantly stronger center section. New center section looks like it is more able to handle the big power. South Bend charged me eactly zero dollars to perform the work, all I had to do was pay the shipping. South bend has absolutely superior customer service and people on hand. Many thanks to Woody at South Bend!

The job went well but my biggest regret is not having my digital camera to post a few pics. My shop is in Idaho and the camera was back at the office in Utah.

In addition to the above work I replaced my old damaged bed and threw on a salvage bed I found locally. Also replaced the front and rear pinion seals. So far I only have about 200 miles on the replacement transmission and aforementioned clutch parts. I am going to get the old 6 speed torn down and looked at to see what it needs.

So you installed a reman transmission?? Or did I read that wrong...

Sounds like you found the problem... clutch stuff. I found that the center hub isn't tough on many clutches, including the OEM pieces... the one we removed from dad's truck at 220k (original clutch) had every spring in the hub loose... however, the flywheel was in top shape and we didn't even resurface it... the replacement clutch was a "stocker" SBC... I'm glad to see they treat their customers well.

Mine was replaced under warranty when new for a defective disc... when I saw you had an 03, that was one of my first thoughts (it only applied to the 03s for whatever reason, but it afflicted my 04. 5)...

I will watch this thread intently as I am really interested in what you might find...

Installed a salvage transmission with 30,000 miles (03 NV5600). It has shifted smoothly in and out for the last few days (350 miles) . . . . but now the new trans is acting up as of this morning.

Backed out of the driveway and stopped for a moment in neutral to adjust some things on the seat. Noticed immediately that there was a noise present . . . . kind of a rotating/spinning sound. Put in clutch pedal and noise goes away. Drive it a bit and when I stop at a light the spinning sound persists when in neutral. Go a bit again and still there. Not all that loud mind you but definitely present. Get to an empty parking lot where i can go in reverse for a ways and noise is louder after having been in reverse.

Does the refurbished clutch need some break in? After all the springs in the clutch disk are brand new. That sounds too easy, I think there is something wrong with the salvage transmission. Input shaft or something related is my guess.
