With time on my hands, I was going through some pictures and came across a before picture and thought it would be interesting to share. So here is a before and after picture of the engine after replacing the valve cover with the “Red” Cummins valve cover, stripped, polished, and with the raised lettering painted. The stock exhaust manifold replaced with an ATS manifold that has been JetHot coated. The Turbo compressor housing polished (the turbine housing, i. e. exhaust housing has been JetHot coated), and a Banks Hi-Ram that was polished and painted.

Kurt - The JetHot coating (inside and out) for the HX36 14mm housing & the ATS manifold was $350. (There are other places that I think will do it for less) Polishing was $170 for the turbo, Hi-Ram and valve cover. Paint stripper stripped the paint off of the valve cover (mostly, polishing did the rest). Paint was $50 for the raised lettering. (See my pictures on “Reader’s Rigs” for the paint type and numbers. ) You can really get carried away polishing; I just did the basics and left it alone between the raised letters and detail. It’s far from perfect, but it looks good. (That’s hard for me to do!). Of course to polish the turbo, you have to take it apart – no big deal. I was thinking of chrome, but decided I would try it polished. (Could always chrome it later). I think I like it fine polished.

Matt – You’re right, I do need to Polish that TPS bracket!

My next project that I have been putting off for about a year is to clean up the mess below. I already threw out my first idea after making a foam mold for a floor console. I like what Stefan Kondolay had done for his ride. I remember someone else doing a console similar, but I couldn't find the post. Any ideas out there?

RADdodge - a couple more questions. How did you go about finding a source for quality workmanship and pricing? Also what was the turnaround time - as in how long was your truck down waiting for the parts to get done ;) I really like how that looks!

The truck doesn’t have to be down unless you’re doing the original turbo. I see you’re planning on a dual turbo set-up, no? Anyway, there was a shop locally that did metal polishing. I have the equipment to do it, but didn’t have the time. I just did some touch up and the lettering. I bought a HX35 and the ATS manifold from Piers, the valve cover from Cummins and the Banks Hi-Ram from the Power Shop in WA. So I didn’t have to have the truck down except for installing the parts. The biggest worry was getting the ATS manifold together after having the barrels coated by the JetHot coating. There is a trick for that one! Doing all the preliminary work took a couple of weeks working part time at it. Anyway, plan on less than a day to install all the parts once you have them done. (And I work slowly – I like to think of it as therapy. I start out slow and then I taper off. )

Kurt - Opps! My mistake. I guess you meant twin stacks! Hey, I liked your big stack! ;) Probably good time to upgrade your turbo too?

Actually it is twin turbos that's in the wings - HVAC is building them now and we'll see if the polishing and JetHot can be done prior to the install. Just wanted to see what it would take in case that isn't possible and I needed to do it afterward. I've had the dual stacks for a little over a year now - I like to think of them as PS and DM bait - he he he :D Thanks again for the info.

shore is purty. Good Job.

hey, is that a silencer ring in there?

and that floorboard looks just like mine has in the past-- with radios in the place of gauges. :p

Yep, that’s the silencer ring. I had to keep it in there because it overloaded the microphone I installed in the turbo sos I could play back the turbo whine through my stereo. That qualifies me as a Diesel Head - I think.

(Kidding of course)

Yea, it will work. It cost me $270. Might be cheaper now. I bought it from the PowerShop. It doesn't do a thing (excepting manufactures claims of course) but look pretty. I think about the only thing it will do is void your warranty! Anyway, you’re long past that!

Hey Puffin – FYI, I was looking at http://www.bullydog.com/dodge/ and saw an intake manifold that looks similar to the Banks Hi-Ram. Here is what they said about their ‘Big Air Kit’ – “Reduces back pressure against turbo charger going into the engine, allows for higher boost pressure in the intake manifold gaining horsepower and reducing heat from the friction of the smaller tube. Fits 98 - present. ”

Don’t know if it’s the same, but I would sill think any performance gain would be minimal. My philosophy is – I don’t care whether it works or not, as long as it looks good! (…then make it work!)
