What is the bellhousing pattern on 1st gens? I know it was not the same as v-8's on later trucks(somewhere I heard it matched the V-10). I just wondered if my 90 shared the pattern with a gas motor or is it ctd only. If it did match is it possible to rebuild a gas 518 to diesel specs? It actually would be really nice to find some kind of year/adapter?/bellhousing/transmission interchange list for these trucks.

Gas 518? Do you mean 318?

The V10 should have the same bellhousing pattern as the small block V8 on which it's based,i. e. , not Cummins pattern.

No, he meant 518, the non-O/D auto transmission. I think so anyway. Clarify if I'm wrong.

Anyway, I Warlock, I feel as though there is something keeping you from doint that, but I cant seem to remember what it is. Wait till one of the guys who actually knows what hes talking about gets here, because thats obviously not me right now...

Sorry, guess I should clarify:eek:. I was talking about the A518 overdrive transmission. I "think" some refer to it as a 46RH. I have two of them from 1 ton vans with a 360. Three wire hookup... 1 for lockup, 1 for overdrive, and 1 for power(maybe ground, have to check my wiring diagrams again:eek:).

My bad, the 727 is the non-O/D, the 518 is the same transmission with O/D. I don't believe there is a lockup on any 518s out there though. Remember also, I'm not sure what youre putting it into, but all the B-series vans were 2wd, which will mean a good amount a modification to put on a 4wd truck.

They won't bolt up. The Cummins is a unique bolt pattern and none of the gasser transmissions will work.

There is something the Cummins and V-10 share but since it is Monday my brains are non-functional.

As I understood a lot of late 80's 727's and most A518's were lockup on the gas motors. It was also my understanding that no diesel 727's had lockup, but that some diesel A518's were lockup. When I was still selling auto parts and I sold a rebuilt trans for a diesel with a A518 it had to be specified. It's odd they would invent a new bellhousing pattern for the early cummins trucks when they already have to have an adapter on the back of the motor. Actually, was trying to see if I could use one of the trans I already had, if I swapped a 1st gen 12valve or 4bt into a 2wd(either my ramcharger or my WarlockII). Thinking about a high mpg 1/2 ton setup.

Nuts!! It took Dodge until 2005 to FINALLY come up with a trans design that would allow a decent lockup strategy. In the early 90's they didn't have a clue about what they didn't know and neither did the aftermarket. :-laf

I suspect DC found it easier to use an existing adapter than have Cummins or somebody else build one for the existing pattern. In addition, the diesel case were beefed up to handle the extra TQ and I suspect the gasser configuration was not up to the task.

What they designated as an A518 or 46RH was always a non lockup for the diesel because of the difference in converter depths. I think the gassers were a 45RH or A500 but that was a long time ago when I saw those numbers.

If you are going to use a 727 good luck finding a good case. They were a limited run and good cases are getting scarce. It may ultimately be cheaper to find a 47RH or RE to put in there as they are a lot more common.

Good luck with the project. :)
