Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Belt Chirp at Shutdown

I have recently installed a new Mopar belt on my truck and now when you shut the truck off it does'nt make that belt chirp anymore, does anyone know why or is there something else that could be wrong with my truck??

cummins says this noise is caused by the engine stopping faster than the belt can

Just a guess but I'd bet the new belt hasn't built up a slight glaze on it thus it's a little more "rubbery" and isn't slipping when you shut it off. You don't have a problem. Mine stopped chirping when I converted to electric fans...

Mine quit when I installed a new belt also. Now the only noise I hear when I shut it down is my turbo rolling to a stop.

I know when mine gets dry,,, new or old, it chirps. I always put a few shots of stp son-of-a-gun on it, quiets it right down for a few months. They say wd-40 will work too... . just my $. 02.

The chirp is just the belt skidding slightly when the engine reverses briefly. That is from running up against compression of the final piston coming up as the engine stops. It isn't harmful but I think it is annoying. I changed the original belt to a Goodyeat Gatorback belt at 50,000 miles to get rid of it.

Petroleum products will degrade the belt rubber, shortening its' life.

Well I know the stp son of a gun protectant is supposed to be good on vinyl,rubber,leather and plastic,,,I am sure wd-40 would be risky. I have used the stp and armor-all on belts for years,, never ruined one yet...

I'll sell you my chirp for around $200, installed, HAHA, just kidding!

All the chirp is is the fan belt. Nothing to get alarmed over, and more of an annoyance than anything.

I've learned in the past all that chirp is the crankshaft stopping faster and "sharper" than the accessories, that makes them squeal the tires so to speak.

03's to 06's have a TSB out for that problem. Involves installing a one way clutch on your alternator pulley. Can't see why you couldn't buy one and put it on the 98. 5 to 01's.

Thats because in the summer you are using your air conditioner which adds a little inertia to the accessories.

I'm thinking I haven't heard my chirp since I replaced the belt last time I had the radiator out and blew out the fins. Is your belt old and glazed over, brittle?

Goodyear Gatorback Poly-V belt here…

The Goodyear belt is made of a composite material and has a slightly different tooth design that eliminates the chirp associated with the OEM and other aftermarket belts.

yes its a --------- instead of a solid rib, right? I bought mine from Cummins while I was there getting a stat, which is why I was cleaning the radiator, it was wanting to run a tad warm. Its all coming back to me now...

I understood that the auto transmission trucks tended to chirp more as the manual trucks have more initeria with the heavy flywheel vs TC

any thoughts?
