belt problems on 2004.5 chirping

I think this becoming a common problem on these new motors My belt lost 2 ribs when I drove it to the dealer . The mechanic @ Dodge told me it the was the belt slipping as the motor was being shut down that the belt was sliding a little causing the belt to scuff and causing to get a hot spot and over time the belt would come apart since this belt was replaced at 8,000 miles by the dealer this problem hasn't happened again and there is no more of that notorius chirping. I just thought I would pass this info on in case anyone else is having this problem I asked the mechanic if it was turbo decompression and he stated no. I can can see this problem becoming a future TSB . Matt

MFenza, thanks. Haven't heard anything abouot that problem for a while. Consensus previously was that it was normal. Have to talk to the dealer about it.

My lack of knowledge on the 3rd gens may make this info worthless, but the Goodyear Gatorback belt, PN 4080810 eliminates chirping on the 12 and 24V second gens.

My belt shredded at only 5400 miles. It chirped horribly at shutdown, but I had never worried about it, as my PSD did that as well, and I considered it "normal" for diesels. Most members here have belts that chirp and last years.



The new Mopar belt the dealer put on is ribbed AND crosshatched - it RARELY chirps on shutdown. Time will tell. Here is a link to a thread over on DTR where ANOTHER new owner had the belt shred on his new '05 two days and 400 miles after picking it up. I linked him to another thread here and on DTR. At least a dozen of us have had belts shred with only a few thousand miles on 04 and 05 trucks.

Roger that swexlin, mine went at 4K miles. The new one chirps only rarely and with 6K on the new one, I think it's going to be OK. Mfenza, I'm not too sure about a "hot spot. " I think the belts are just plain defective, chirp or no chirp. The outermost strength member delaminated from my belt; I believe the cut, flapping end wound up under the grooves and caused the belt to jump a groove, which caused the belt to self-destruct.

I don't think the chirping and belt failure are related either. All mine have chirped. Last one went over 30k between belts no problem.

I don't neccisarily (sp?) thinks so either, just posting my observation. The belt that CUMMINS supplied with the engines was only ribbed, not crosshatched, and it chirped bad. I don't know where Cummins gets their belts. The MOPAR belt is ribbed and crosshatched, seems like a better design, and rarely chirps. Time will tell.



I think DDimarco got it right - a slight delamination of a defective belt will spectaculary fail, given time.

my brother just picked up a 05 ho automatic 4x4. .

it shredded the belt with only 400 miles on it. .

i am new to posting where is the thread that mentions the fix or problem

that causes this.

I put the link in my response in your other thread. Short version - except for one guy who was diagnosed with a bad idler/tension, the rest of us, the dealer just put on a new belt, and sent us on our merry way.
