Belt Squeak

Has anyone had either the belt or Tensioner squeak when the engine is cold, sometimes its alot louder than other times, especially if its cold outside its REAL loud, I think it may be the tensioner but I'm not sure any suggestions appreciated

I've never had a belt squeak while running. My 90 used to chirp when I shut her down. I have had the bearing in the tensioner go bad. I tried getting grease into it, but it didn't do much.



You can get the exact tensioner that comes from the factory, at Advance Auto Parts. Serpentine Belt Tensioner - Dayco #89219



If you do get a replacement, the new ones have a 1/2" hole instead of 3/8". I think it's better now as I can use my 1/2" breaker bar to pry it.

I just wonder if the dealer still sales the tensioner or would I be foolish for buying from the dealer, sometimes those Auto Zone and Advance Auto parts places stuff just doesn't seem to be that good??? And I'm not for sure its the tensioner just yet.

I bought my tensioner from a Cummins dealer. I can't remember the price. It was a couple of years ago.

I aquire "most" cummins parts from the branch in Columbus Ohio. "Cummins Bridgeway" They have the tensioner for like $125. 00. I'll try the Advanved Auto next time 'round.



I think they know it's for OUR TRUCKS. The same tensioner for an Industial 5. 9 is like $65. 00 from Cummins. The ONLY difference is the placement of the pin.

What I was trying to say in my first reply, was that the Dayco tensioner is THE same one that is installed from the factory. When I had to replace mine, I cleaned it up and it was the exact one that I took off.

Thanks Tugboat, atleast I might be able to save some money then called Dealer this morning and they want 90. 00 for it will call Advance Auto parts then, thanks

How old is the belt? I've had trouble with some belts squeaking after they get some miles on them. Really had a problem with the old Ford. had to put a new one on every 30K or so.



I think I would try a new belt first to see if that is it. Especially if it has been on a while. Keep the old one as a spare.

Got a new tensioner at Carquest. Was a USA made part and $85 IIRC with a new pulley.



you can get a pulley only for less cash if the tensioner itself is still good. Mine was weak and not putting enough tension on the belt.

I think it may be the belt with my tensioner pushed all the way over till it want go any further, the belt want even come off unless I put a small screwdriver under it an roll it, was a real B#$%@h, How long is this belt supposed to be, the truck has A/C, power steering,etc?

Well I found out that belt was 1" shorter than it should have been, now in file 13 and the right belt ready to go on, that was probably the reason the belt or what I thought might have been the tensioner pulley raising cain, too TIGHT, thanks for all the help guys.
