Anyone using a belt-tensioner from NAPA-lifetime warranty {whose life?}, (made in Korea). Geeezz, my brides whole car is made in Korea  I'm just wondering about the quality  It started screeeching real bad Friday, too late to get to the Cummins Shop, and have to travel Saturday. It installed real easy, (30ft lbs on one bolt).

Give me some feedback y'all :D

Patrick.

I think this is one of those items that need to be purchased from Cummins or the dealer.

I have been running a tensioner wheel cut from billet aluminum (not the entire assembly, just the wheel).

In less than a year the surface of the wheel has pretty much failed. It had a fairly deep concave surface which in turn caused my new gatorback belt to start shredding the ribs on the belt.

When we removed it I was very surprised to see the wear that took place in under 1 year.

I put the old (orginal) OEM wheel back on but looked at it closely before doing so.

I was again surprised to see virtually zero sign of similar wear on it and, the thing is plastic if you can believe it.

Just one of those things I guess... . :D

Sore spot with me. I am aware of two 5. 9's that are in the scrap heap from a bum belt tensioner. For my engine, Cummins has superseded the tensioner no less that SIX times! Problem is that when the tensioner starts failing, the belt destroys itself, and the engine keeps running with no water pump (and no fan either I guess in a Dodge)

I just bought mine from Cummins, seems like it was pricey at $92, but not a part to use cheap replacements for. In all fairness, I do not know if the Korea made one is any better or worse than the Cummins one, but I will let someone else make the tests.

Patrick,

I had to replace a tensioner. The one I took off, which I believed to be from the factory, as it looked like every one I ever saw, said "Dayco" on it. I found the identical one at Advance Auto Parts. Don't know if you all have those out there, but they do mail order. Anyway, it has been great, plus the new one had a 1/2" square hole, instead of the 3/8", so that I could use my 1/2" breaker bar for an easier install.

The part number is Serpentine Belt Tensioner - Dayco #89219

Good Luck!

p. s. Have you gotten washed off the hill with all that rain?

Tensioner...

Thanks guys for the quick replys :D The cost at NAPA was $122. 00, in Southern California. I'll get to the Cummins Dealer this week. Does anyone know the Cummins part #? See my signature for truck details. At least I can take the old one to the shop. Can the wheel can just be replaced? The part I removed has Dayco stamped.

Happy rattling, Patrick.

dayco

i had a thread last week about squeeking at idel, and screeching at shut down. i had replaced my OEM tensioner with the dayco one from auto zone about 2 months ago. well the cause of the latest squeeking and screeching was from the new tensioner, witch had gone bad. took it off, and replaced it with a new one. i will see how long this 2nd one lasts. but in every part manufactured, there is bound to be some bad ones. so i am not saying the Dayco one is a bad tensioner. just that i had one fail with only 2 months of use, witch was about 4300 miles. if this new one fails i will get a new one, because under warranty and then sell it on e-bay. and then go to Cummins and get one from there!

Interesting, the one I just bought is Cummins nr 3978022 . If you search the archives for posts by Don/TX, the thread "Belt Tensioner POS" will show you a good photo of the new one. #ad
