Hey all,

Then front end of my engine sounds like it's going to explode!! I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to the A/C pully or the tensioner. It has a bad metallic rattle sound when running. There's also a burning (plastic/metal) smell after running for a while (metal shavings all over pulleys). The rattle does not increase with the rpm's (until it's too loud to hear anything, not sure after that). After searching this site, I'll run out now & take the belt off to spin everything... . That should get my answer.

My question: My father has a 99, 2500, gasser. Would his tensioner fit my truck?? Long shot question. Looking for an emergency fix for tomorrow if needed until new one is in store.

I need 3/8" ratchet to move tensioner the remove the belt right?

TIA,

Erik

Wish I had searched the forums this morning while the auto parts stores were open!! It's the AC pulley - I now realize I can by-pass it for now with a no AC belt I can get tomorrow.

Pulley on the AC compressor wobbles when the belt is off. I guess that's where all the metal shavings are coming from!! Ohhh well.

Any clues on the removal or install?

I'll search here for now

Thanks

Erik

Chances are you'll be buying a complete new compressor. Usually the bearing locks up and ruins the compressor where the inner race rides. It's just an alluminum snout on the compressor. Nothing that 500. 00 won't cure. Very rarely you can just install a new clutch. Jake

That's what I was told by a few today..... I did pick up the No-AC belt for my truck & installed it!! Do I really need AC over the winter?

A/C can be real handy in the winter if you need to de-fog the windshield. It's setup to come on in defrost mode in many cars/trucks.

I know it helps out a good amount, but what about the many, many, many trucks/cars that come w/out A/C? I figure, if they can hack it..... I can hack it!! heheheeee

It'll bring back the days of my old K5 - reaching out the window w/the squeegee to scrape the ice forming on the winshield!! ;)
