 Learned my lesson the hard way... had to replace (from NAPA) because of squeeling, it started to wear the back of the belt with under 1k miles on it :{ (white/grey powder found). Went to Cummings, got the right part, $116. 00. Here's the correct number, (see signature) #3935819. Installs, perfect :D (30ft. lbs on single bolt).

Patrick,

I'm curious. Did the Cummins part have "Cummins" stamped into or on it? I have only seen Dayco tensioners on the ones I have looked at.

I believe that Phil has another method of belt replacement.

Tensioner...

The part is stamped "Dayco. " I looked exactly like the one I took off. The wheel is a non-metalic material  . I bought it at Cummins Cal Pacific. Do you think this is OEM?

Patrick.

I have replaced (due to my own destructive behavior) two of these. One on my 90 and the other on my 93. Both were Dayco. The new ones have a larger square hole which allows the use of a 1/2" breaker bar for belt changes. To my knowledge, they are what came out of the factory.

I'm curious if anyone has tried the Gates tensioner. Mine went south a few hours ago and I found this one on ROCKAUTO. COM: It looks to be a quality part, and Gates is a respected name. They also listed the Dayco part for $75. 79. The Gates one (below) is listed as $77. 89. They had several others including one from ACDelco for over $100. 00. I'm leaning towards the one from Gates unless anyone can tell me otherwise.

OK, I ordered the Gates tensioner. The guy I spoke to at RockAuto.com was a MOPAR fanatic and he also reccomended the Gates part over the Dayco one. $84. 08 with shipping. I'll post my opinion of the part when I get it, since the tensioner seems to be one of the few "common problems" we have with first gens.

Use OEM Cummins!

The metal wheel on the non-Cummins part started wearing the back side of my belt under 1,000 miles of use  I highly recommed using the part number listed #3935819 IMHO, with the non-metalic wheel. This way you do the job once :laf NAPA, Auto Zone, had the part with the metal wheel with the tag, "made in Korea" I think they should only make Hyundai's in Korea  Cummins part is on my truck, all's well :D

I have only seen a few of the plastic idlers. Most if not all the unit's I purchase from Cummins have the metal idler. This includes all Cummins engines and not limited to our trucks.
