Bench Vise.

Does anyone know where I can buy a good bench vise, i. e. , one not made in China by underpaid Chinamen. I looked in Home Depot, Sears and Harbor Freight -- they are all made in China. :{ :{

your best bet is to buy one used from a pawn shop or something... I looked long and hard before I broke down and bought a chinese one... the US made ones are WAY expensive.

Another good make of vise is RECORD. They're well-made in England. A Google search will show you who carries them. Nice stuff.

I prefer the leg or blacksmith vise to the bench vises. They are forged vs. cast and withstand a lot more abuse. Here are some new ones, but you can get used ones on Ebay or Yard sales for a lot less. Matt

Just a suggestion... ... ... . get a BIG one. As big as you can afford and/or fit into your shop. It will come in handy for holding large objects, bending metal and banging/shaping things on the anvil side.

I would HIGHLY recommend Wilton. I have two, one on the reciever hitch of the service truck and one on the workbench in the shop. Well made and will last a lifetime. Expensive, but you get what you pay for. A word of caution: The red colored Wilton vise is the cheap chinese version. Get the gray colored one. it has "Made in USA" casted into the side. Wilton also makes some of the only MADE IN USA C-clamps I have found. Good company. I would highly recommend Wilton. You can also buy their products from MSC. We buy a lot of equipment and tools for our shop/business from them. They have a huge catalog and list the country of origin of almost all their products, which I particularily like since I do not buy chinese. Their web site is www.mscdirect.com
