Benchmade Knives

Anyone have one of there automatic models? What kind of quality are they? Are they worth the extra money? How is the steel in the blades?

I don't have an automatic model, but have a Benchmade I received as a graduation present two years ago... . best knife I've ever used, and I won't ever buy anything else. From what I know, they are 100% made in the USA (Oregon somewhere). I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

I have two of them. The blades react VERY fast. The thing is that the torx screws losten up constantly tho due to the mechanics of the knife. I also have a Bench made Stryker with the Tonto carbon blade ... . NOW THAT"S A KNIFE!

I own three. Best knives I've ever had. You won't see me without mine clipped to my pocket (unless I'm in court or a strip club w/ metal detectors). The autos are very smooth.

I have one. It's not automatic though.

It's the Emerson design, I think it's number is 975 SBT. Large tanto folder.

Great knife!!

I bought a CKRT Hammond design a while back. It was something like $12. 00, as opposed to the $100. 00 or so for the Benchmade.

I've been wearing the CKRT for a long time. It's fast opening, sharp, durable, has a pocket clip, and I dont care if I lose it somewhere.

The model I was actually looking at is the stryker with the serrated tanto blade.



I had a Spyderco, but was not pleased with the steel in the blade.



I lost the spyderco after carrying it for about 5 years and decided it's time to get a new knife.

I have three..

I have three. One automatic and two axis locks. Personally, I like the axis locks better than the automatic. They are about the same speed getting the blade out, but I can close the axis locks as quickly as I can open them and the automatic just does not compete. I think that they are all fantastic. As far as the steels used, they go from 58-62 Rc and that is very hard. The only two things that you should know is that most of their blades are martensitic stainless steel and they will pit if left wet, etc. Secondly the blades are so hard that they are hard to sharpen when they finally do get dull.

I have an Auto model. I use it at work. A lot of my co-workers have them too. They are about the finest Auto knifes made. If you have the money, go for it. The bades are hard, and hold an edge long. They have a lifetime warranty on their mechanism. I can get them for around 120 dollars, but I dont know what you can do. I think they are restricted to military, fire, and law enforcement. I bought mine used for $50, and it is the best auto knife I have ever owned.

What's up with Oregon and companies that make cutting tools like Gerber/Fiskars, Leatherman Tools and Oregon Cutting Systems for dropping trees?

I have two Benchmade automatics and one thumb opener. The button on the thumb opener used to loosen up until I hit it with a bit of Loctite. I carry one of the automatics unless I'm headed for California where they are considered "assault knives. "

Is an automatic knife is like a "switchblade"?. I thought they were illegal. ?

It is a switchblade, although I think a switchblade is one that comes straight out the end. A stilletto swings out the side. I might be confused though.

I always thought a front opener was commonly refered to as a "stomach knife".

I think the term "stiletto" is more or less the type of knife.

I believe an automatic knife is pretty much defined by "assisted opening with help of a spring".

I aint no expert here... ... ... .

Switchblades and automatics are one and the same. Out the front are called OTFs and out the sides are called, logically, OTS. I have a Boker Top Lock OTS, made in Germany, and another Germany made OTF knife. The OTF knife opens and closes automatically with a switch. Don't carry around either one, just for my knife collection. I believe Germany banned production of automatic knifes in January 2003. Boker moved production of their automatics to Argentina... quality not as good, but knife is cheaper. Germany made automatics for sale will be hard to find in a few years.
