Bent the bed today!!

Well today I hooked up to the 3 car gooseneck to haul some panels for the roof on the shop and somehow the trailer hit the bed and pushed the bed to the right side! Now how it happened... I was pulling to the side of the road to swing out to back in and their was a 3"drop off from the pavement to the dirt and as it went off I heard a thump. Thought it was the tire dropping off. Pulled out and started to back up and in the mirror I see the top of the bed is dented. Thought GREAT now I got to fix that! Well I get out to unhook and grab the tailgate handle. . won't budge!Grab a handful of gate and yank comes off in my hands! :{ Pull up to check it out a little better and man the whole bed is bent!!The top left side is pushed over to the right,the top right is also to the right,the bumper is touching on the right,the panel behind the gate on the bottom is cocked,the cab is sticking out on the left side past the bed and the right is behind the bed,the gate mount on the right is pushed in to the tail light,the gate mount on the right is bent and so is the corner of the gate. Now all this happened at less than 5mph!I had 2 friends with me and they could not believe the damage considering we did not even feel anything only heard a thump! :{ Anyone comming to the high desert diesel roundup can see it. I will post some pics an soon as I can. Oh yea the trailer was empty!

Shopping for a goose-neck myself, and getting one with plenty of clearance no matter what angle the truck is at is a major concern.

Have same set up as you with 4X4.

I second that, my truck has faired pretty well but the under side of my fifth wheel has not. And that is only from normal maneuvering. If it was gooseneck that was going over rougher terrain I would want at least 8 to 10 inches of clearance. The longer the trailer (trailer axles from the trucks) the more clearance you need.

Well I got 2 Estimates and 1 was $10,125 and the other was $11,245. The Ins. co came back with $5544. 00. They want to put a used bed on it and I said no way!The guy tried to low ball it thinking I was stupid, but after telling his supervisor That I had my own body shop for 10 yrs. She said she would send another adjuster out to rewrite it. She was not to happy the guy wrote the est. from pics and not while at the truck. The guy had to ask me if it was a long or short bed and laughed at the other estimates. I'm thinking when this is settled I am going to another co.

Holy smokes!! I was looking at custom flatbeds today and was thinking man they are expensive. Now reading this I could get one fine custom alluminum bed for less than what they want to fix yours! Ofcourse you obviously have more problems than just replacing a bed.

I have seen a few like that and they are nice but I gotta have a bed. The bed alone was $6850. 00 and $605. 00 for the tailgate. Somebody posted a while back about how much it would cost to piece one of these trucks together and it was like buying 2 of them!

Take off beds are always used when possable by insurance/owners/body shops. Most have never had a thing in them.

I tagged mine with a goosneck too. I considered putting a flatbed on it but the damage wasn't that bad and I was able to make my tailgate work again. Goosenecks and lifted trucks makes you really pay attention to the terrain. Sorry for your luck

Check with the truck body places, I know that they would only give us $300 credit for the new old box so we kept our boxes to resell. We have a red,silver,and white 8ft dually boxes. I know the truck body place has several boxes also in Grand Rapids, Michigan. So you should be able to find one. We sell ours for $1500 complete.

New takeoffs are $1,200 in Washburn, MO. Last time I checked they had about 18 - all colors.

Sorry for your troubles , if possible could you post some pics. I'd like to see how extensive the damage is i cant believe how incredibly weak these bodies are .

THATS the reason INSURANCE comanys WON"T use new. PERIOD. My neighbor cut down a tree in the yard and CRUSHED his bed! :-laf I took his truck to work with me back then and a takeoff NEW bed was sitting there 48 hours later same color not a scratch one. His adjuster was like and said fix it(it already was).

I have pics but can't find the cable to download them. Yeh I already have a take off for it,but the guy wanted used!I have no problem with a take off but not a used one. I should have it done this weekend. Funny thing was I never even felt anything while turning no bogging or resistance or noise.

$1400 for a steel Temco with two under rail boxes, gooseneck hitch, mudflaps, lights, complete install, including old box taken off and loaded onto flatbed.



$250 for Xlined deck and rear.



$priceless - no flimsy box to worry about. :-laf

I have a service body on my 05 SRW looks great. It came from Oregon Metal Works. And I have the bed that came off my truck (flame red).
