Best 285/75R16 Tire for the Money????

I may sound like an idiot, but here is what I have been through. I had a 98, and now have an 01, Running almost identical power and road habits.



98

goodforayear rt/s about 30000 not good

Firestone Radial R4S 265s about 30,000 miles decent all around tire

Goodyear AT/S 285s about 20,000 miles Good offroad nuf said

Bridgestone Dueler A/T 285s about 20,000 miles OK tire, not hard enough

Michelin ltx m/s about 80,000 miles

michelin ltx m/s running at 8,000 miles



Note the mileage that the road tires get compared to the off road tires, maybe 3x the miles!



Personal opinion, for my money and the traction and life all considered, and for simply heavy duty construction, the michelins are awesome.



ps they hold nails without leaking better than any I have ever had.

Walmart Liberators for $95 each plus $9. 99 each for road hazard warranty & balance/rotate for life. They are made for Walmart by Michelin. Load range D. Oo. Oo. Oo.

I'm also running the Pep Boys Dakota tires in a 285. In 10,000 miles they aren't showing any wear which is good at my power level and as hard as my transmission shifts. I regularly lay a 2 foot patch of rubber at anything more than 1/2 throttle on a gear change. I paid $96. 00 a tire which included the full warranty and free balance and rotate for life. They look a lot like the BFGs. I liked my michelin LTX's and put 56,000 miles on them but the traction on anything but dry pavement was horrible. I couldn't even move a trailer load of hay out of a wet barnlot without slinging mud everywhere. And on wet pavement they would break loose and swing the back of the truck around at anything more than just idling up to speed. I've had to use 4 wheel drive in Branson on paved hills when waiting in line at stop lights as the truck wouldn't take off on the wet blacktop.

BFG TA/KO Last set had 72,000 on them and there was at least 5,000 left on them. Changed them out for a new set due to the winter comming on. Won't ride on anything else. I went through 3 sets of Wranglers before the BFG's. I now have 180,000 on the truck.

Wildcats are good (and one of the first 285's to hit the market way back when) and reasonably priced. I have a set and they are pretty decent.

Coopers are excellent tires.

The Wal-Mart liberators also have proven to be good (my brother in law has a set of 285 liberators on his truck). His only problem was wally world wouldnt mount the 285's on his truck. between tires and mounting/balancing he has ~430$ invested. not bad at all.

I'm glad you liked them and had good luck with them. That has not been my experience with them. They are junk IMHO.

Cooker, Im curious what it was about cooper you didn't like? I'm always looking for more info. We have had countless sets of coopers and have had very good luck with them.

Sidewalls cracking in less than 20k miles (these were on a minivan and were replaced a couple of times). Terrible mileage out of the AT's, in less than 30k miles they were worth a crap in the snow and had very little tread left (on a Chevy 1500 that towed nothing and a Chevy 2500 that towed a cattle trailer occassionally). Ply separation (they offered to replace these but by then I was fed up with Cooper tires).



On a positive note, the last set of Cooper ST's we purchased seem to be doing the best of any Cooper tire we have owned. Even so I do not think we will ever own another set of Cooper tires.

If yo uhad bad luck, why did you keep buying them?

My aunt and uncle own/run a tire store, and cooper is one of the tires they sell among many others. I work for them occasionally. It seems as though we have best luck with wildcats and coopers. We do not have as good of luck with BFG's KO. Maybe just coincidence, maybe regional differences. who knows.

We started off buying the Coopers for our vehicles and replace all our tires within a year of eachother. For the price they looked to be a decent tire. I guess some people have good luck with them

Getting 6 General Ameritracs (tire that came on truck) mounted, balanced, including tax for $971. 00 Thats for 6 of them ofcourse. I have 43,000 on my current set and I will get probobly another 5,000 or so.



I go through 2 sets of tires a year. Ive tried every tire on my last three trucks known to man. The best are the Michilens but they are pricey. My last set on my 01 were General Ameritracs. they came factory on my 04. 5 so I sticken with them. I tow very heavy almost everyday. Liberators, Coopers, and Pepboys Dakotas have all given me less than satifactory results.

I found this thread and thought I would bring it back up. I just ordered 4 Kumho AT825's for $104 each off of Tire Rack. What air pressures are you guys running with these tires? I will be unloaded 99% of the time.

All right guys, looking for the best real world tire for the money in 285/75R16. By real world, I mean durability (in miles), wet and dry performance, quality (no cupping issues, out of roundness, etc. ), and of course price. Give me some mileage numbers to back up your claims.



Right now I am leaning towards a set of the Cooper Discoverer S/T for $570 out the door.



Are there any better alternatives out there. I like the look of the Bridgestone Dueler Revo, but all the dealers I talk are really proud of them ($170-$180 for the tire only).



Let me hear your tire experiences.

I am running 285 Yokohama Geolander ATII's. 35K and almost bald. They were cheap ( $102 ea @ Tire Rack) and balanced out nice( 1. 5 to 3. 5 oz!)

I am running the Toyo M-55s. Seem to be wearing great and have good traction in all conditions. Unless I am sideways.



They do talk to you at low speeds with the windows down, but it's hardly noticeable. Also, the 'E' rating makes for a predictable, well steering tire. These drive better than my OEM Michelins.

I have had two sets of Pep Boys Futura Dakotas and have been very happy with them. I usually run them to no more than 6/32 of tread which equals out to about 55-65K miles. Depends on the right foot. No complaints for 90. 00 dollars a tire.
