Add me to the '03 - early '04 recommendation list too. Though I mainly use my '03 over the road and don't tow, I've had very little problems with it. I upgraded from a '98. 5 and really liked the extra power and the fact that the engine was A LOT quieter. My wife has an early '04. It's her first diesel and she loves it. Haven't had any problems with it either. The standard '04 engine is the same as the '03 HO, I believe. The only two things that I know to look out for are the lift pumps (I have about 99K on mine with a FASS or Air Dog in my near future) and the 47RE/48RE automatics tend to have some gear hunt issues, but both issues are easily remedied. When I added my Banks Six Gun package, not having a catalytic converter made replacing the exhaust a whole lot simpler. Just my $0. 02 worth.

04. 5 in CA is the 325/600 CTD. It is the one of the first HO allowed in CA, now there was for a very short time (60 days) the 04 HO 305/555 you could get here. Mine is the 04. 5 325/600 purchased in April of 04. I would not buy a CTD until they allowed a HO, which at the time I was not aware of the new 600 CTD and was lucky when purchased. :)
Thanks for the clarification. I believe Bob4x4 posted that the cat kills 2-4 hp. I think the third injection event does more damage to the mpg.

Thanks for all the advice, I purchased an 04 today, 101K miles and needs a good bath. It was in great shape and could not resist the price of 15. 5K.

Once again, THANKS!!!!!
